Of those, at least 114 attacks “led to Palestinian fatalities and injuries,” according to the report. Crowds gathered in the capital city of West Bengal state and marched toward its secretariat, demanding that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee step down. They accused her of mishandling the investigation into the killing, which occurred in one of the city’s state-run hospitals. On Tuesday, local police barricaded the roads leading to the secretariat, while mobilizing 6,000 security personnel for the planned march, which had not been allowed by authorities, India’s NDTV [reported](~/AASU4wA~/RgRosXm9P0RCaHR0cHM6Ly9hLnBvc3QubGhkLmxpbmsvNnhsbnI4dGtuYi8_bGhfYWlkPTE4ODMzJmxoX2NpZD01NnJneDJsNzU3VwNzcGNCCma7v_TOZsGuCIpSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg5QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAWg~~). Indian media showed footage of students and protesters scaling the barricades, while police used tear gas, water cannons, and batons to disperse them. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in opposition in West Bengal, called for a 12-hour strike in response to the police action. “Instead of justice, Mamata Banerjee’s police are turning on the peace-loving people of the state, who only wanted a safe and secure environment for women,” the party said. Banerjee’s ruling Trinamool Congress Party blamed the BJP for creating unrest in the city. The protest was the latest of a series of demonstrations across India and South Asia following the Aug. 9 rape, murder, and alleged torture of a 31-year-old medical student at Kolkata’s R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital. Amid the outcry, junior doctors earlier this month went on strike to demand safer working conditions, while India’s Supreme Court created a hospital safety task force. The program allows non-Canadian citizens to work in the North American country on a short-term basis. But Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday decided to amend it amid a public uproar over immigration. The changes included a 10-percent cap on low-wage temporary foreign employees per employer. Applications to hire such workers will be denied in regions with unemployment rates of six percent or more. Contracts will also now have a maximum duration of one year instead of two. The move came after the scheme was criticized for suppressing Canadians’ wages while doing little to protect foreign workers from abuse. The scheme was expanded in 2022 to boost Canada’s economy after the Covid-19 pandemic, when pathways to immigration closed completely, leaving the country with severe labor shortages. However, according to Trudeau, the need for foreign workers has diminished with inflation and unemployment numbers going back to normal. The number of temporary foreign workers has more than doubled over Trudeau’s tenure since 2015, reaching nearly 240,000 last year. With temporary foreign workers making up nearly seven percent of Canada’s total population, Canadians have grown opposed to more immigration. A few days later, Muhyiddin reiterated that he made a “factual statement that was not intended to insult the monarchy or contain any seditious tendency.” Malaysia’s unique monarchial set-up sees kings from its peninsular states rotate every five years. They mostly hold ceremonial power but are also tasked with appointing prime ministers. They are held in deep respect by the country’s Malay majority. He could barely speak, but he was carrying two letters claiming that he was kept in isolation his entire childhood. His name, he said, was Kaspar Hauser. The boy soon became a celebrity, with newspapers calling him the “orphan of Europe.” Then, people speculated that Kaspar was the son of a German prince, a myth that survived nearly two centuries. “It’s claimed to be one of the biggest historical mysteries of the 19th century,” [said](~/AASU4wA~/RgRosXm9P0RCaHR0cHM6Ly9hLnBvc3QubGhkLmxpbmsvZWlyeXlxb3c2NC8_bGhfYWlkPTE4ODMzJmxoX2NpZD01NnJneDJsNzU3VwNzcGNCCma7v_TOZsGuCIpSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg5QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAWg~~) geneticist Turi King from the University of Bath. Now, King and her team established that Kaspar Hauser was, in fact, not related to the House of Baden. The only surviving son of Carl, Grand Duke of Baden, died shortly after birth in 1812. The conspiracy theory had it that Carl’s son was actually Kaspar, who was kidnapped as a baby and swapped out with a dying child to alter the royal lineage. Kaspar was eventually stabbed to death on Dec. 14, 1833, after nightfall. In their [study](~/AASU4wA~/RgRosXm9P0RCaHR0cHM6Ly9hLnBvc3QubGhkLmxpbmsvODQ0dXZzcGs2ay8_bGhfYWlkPTE4ODMzJmxoX2NpZD01NnJneDJsNzU3VwNzcGNCCma7v_TOZsGuCIpSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg5QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAWg~~), King and her colleagues looked at bloodstains left on his clothes from that evening. The stains had already been analyzed in the late 20th century without much fanfare. Comparing it with samples of Kaspar’s hair, the team could prove the authenticity of the bloodstains for the first time, seeing that the DNA was the same across both samples. New forensic technologies then enabled them to observe his mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited from the mother’s line. When compared with samples from the House of Baden, there was no match. The discovery put to bed, once and for all, the controversial “Prince theory.” Still, no one knows where the orphan of Europe came from. “His mitochondrial DNA type is one that’s Westeurasian but we can’t narrow it down to a geographical region,” King [said](~/AASU4wA~/RgRosXm9P0RCaHR0cHM6Ly9hLnBvc3QubGhkLmxpbmsvMnV4cXo5ZmptZi8_bGhfYWlkPTE4ODMzJmxoX2NpZD01NnJneDJsNzU3VwNzcGNCCma7v_TOZsGuCIpSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg5QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAWg~~).
