When he returned, his house was on fire. “We are (Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar) Ben-Gvir’s gang,” he heard the settlers shout, as he [recounted](~/AASU4wA~/RgRosXm9P0RCaHR0cHM6Ly9hLnBvc3QubGhkLmxpbmsvdjh4NmszMnpzai8_bGhfYWlkPTE4ODMzJmxoX2NpZD01NnJneDJsNzU3VwNzcGNCCma7v_TOZsGuCIpSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg5QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAWg~~) to CNN. “They told us to leave, to go to Sinai, to Jordan, to Syria – or ‘we will come back for you and kill you.’” The settlers fired bullets, tear gas and threw Molotov cocktails, setting homes and cars on fire. Meanwhile, soldiers arrived to stop the violence but didn’t arrest anyone. The court will deliver a verdict after hearings in November. Muhyiddin, 77, chairs Malaysia’s opposition coalition, Perikatan Nasional, a conservative, Malay-centric alliance. Speaking to a crowd of supporters at a by-election campaign on Aug. 15, he commented on former King Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah’s decision not to appoint him as prime minister following the 2022 parliamentary election, which produced a hung parliament. Anwar Ibrahim was chosen for the top job. “If we followed the Constitution, I had a total that was more than enough to become the prime minister. A few days later, Muhyiddin reiterated that he made a “factual statement that was not intended to insult the monarchy or contain any seditious tendency.” Malaysia’s unique monarchial set-up sees kings from its peninsular states rotate every five years. They mostly hold ceremonial power but are also tasked with appointing prime ministers. They are held in deep respect by the country’s Malay majority. Malaysia does not have an explicit lèse-majesté law like that of Thailand, but legislation inherited from British colonial rule has been invoked to suppress comments on the monarchy and other speech that could jeopardize national unity. He could barely speak, but he was carrying two letters claiming that he was kept in isolation his entire childhood. His name, he said, was Kaspar Hauser. The boy soon became a celebrity, with newspapers calling him the “orphan of Europe.” Then, people speculated that Kaspar was the son of a German prince, a myth that survived nearly two centuries. “It’s claimed to be one of the biggest historical mysteries of the 19th century,” [said](~/AASU4wA~/RgRosXm9P0RCaHR0cHM6Ly9hLnBvc3QubGhkLmxpbmsvZWlyeXlxb3c2NC8_bGhfYWlkPTE4ODMzJmxoX2NpZD01NnJneDJsNzU3VwNzcGNCCma7v_TOZsGuCIpSG3RyaXN0cmFtYmFsZHdpbjg5QGdtYWlsLmNvbVgEAAAAWg~~) geneticist Turi King from the University of Bath. Now, King and her team established that Kaspar Hauser was, in fact, not related to the House of Baden. The only surviving son of Carl, Grand Duke of Baden, died shortly after birth in 1812. The conspiracy theory had it that Carl’s son was actually Kaspar, who was kidnapped as a baby and swapped out with a dying child to alter the royal lineage. Kaspar was eventually stabbed to death on Dec. 14, 1833, after nightfall. The stains had already been analyzed in the late 20th century without much fanfare. Comparing it with samples of Kaspar’s hair, the team could prove the authenticity of the bloodstains for the first time, seeing that the DNA was the same across both samples. New forensic technologies then enabled them to observe his mitochondrial DNA, which is inherited from the mother’s line. When compared with samples from the House of Baden, there was no match.
