As we continue our work towards a future free from gun violence, Domestic Violence Awareness Month serves as a solemn reminder of the connection between guns and domestic violence in our nation. Firearms are used to commit over half of intimate partner homicides in the United States. Although anyone can be impacted by domestic violence, women are three times more likely to be killed by an abusive partner. Every year, more than 600 American women are shot and killed by intimate partners—roughly one every 14 hours. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court upheld the federal law that prohibits people subject to domestic violence restraining orders from possessing guns. Although we were disheartened that this decades-long standard was challenged in the first place, we were glad that women’s safety prevailed. But {NAME}, the work is far from over. Gun lobby extremists will stop at nothing to chip away at our laws protecting women from domestic violence. We must continue on together in our advocacy and legislative work to ensure that individual states pass legislation that prohibits domestic abusers from having access to guns.
