As a kid growing up in rural Nebraska, he thought of guns as tools for hunting, not destructive weapons that could be used in a mass shooting. Governor Walz would often go hunting with friends after school. When Tim Walz was first elected to Congress in 2007 to represent a deep red district in Minnesota, he had an A rating from the NRA. The organization also endorsed and donated to his congressional campaigns. But Walz had a change of heart after a mass shooter at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas took the lives of 60 individuals and injured over 860 more. Faced with the realities of gun violence, Walz announced that he would donate the $18,000 that he had received from the NRA to charity. "I’ll take my kick in the butt from the NRA," he said, and pledged to refuse NRA contributions going forward. He’s kept that promise. Today, Tim Walz gets straight F’s from the NRA—a fact that he’s very proud of. Then, after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018, his daughter asked him to do more to stop gun violence. From then on, Walz has taken transformative action on gun violence. Last year, Governor Walz closed dangerous loopholes in background checks and implemented extreme risk protection orders to temporarily prevent individuals who are at high risk of harming themselves or others from having access to firearms. Tim Walz is exactly the type of person we need as a partner in our movement for gun safety. He represents the many gun owners in America who believe in the power of responsible gun ownership and agree that commonsense gun safety legislation is just what it sounds like—common sense. His evolution shows that it’s never too late to be on the right side of history.
