When I was 16, my life was changed when I learned about the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. I represent Florida’s 10th District in the US House of Representatives. I’m the first Gen-Z member of Congress, and I’ve been involved in the gun violence prevention movement for over a decade. I was eating with my friends before a high school band concert when I saw the news. The tragedy called me to action, and I attended the vigil in Washington, D.C. where I met some of the loved ones of those who lost their lives. Seeing their pain, I knew that I could not rest until we see a future free from gun violence. And so I became an organizer in the gun safety movement. Then three years after Sandy Hook, I became a survivor myself. I was appointed a vice chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task Force in Congress—a position I’m honored to hold. We must enact transformative, commonsense legislation to end our country’s gun violence epidemic. That’s why I’ll work hard every day in Congress to make gun safety a reality in our nation. I’m grateful that organizations like GIFFORDS will be there to help me with this important effort.
