Then just this week, we welcomed the news of Surgeon General Vivek Murthy having the courage to call our nation’s gun violence problem what it truly is: a public health crisis. We’re making progress, but our opponents are fighting to erase it. Meanwhile, our gun violence crisis rages on. We never should have gotten to this point, {NAME}. We never should have gotten to the point where every day, over 120 people in our nation die from gun violence. We never should have gotten to the point where nearly 44,000 people die from gun violence every year. We never should have gotten to the point where gun violence has become the NUMBER ONE cause of death for children in our nation. This is the status quo. But it doesn’t have to be this way. There are real solutions—such as universal background checks, safe storage laws, and extreme risk protection orders—that can help prevent gun violence and keep our communities safer.
