Online purchases increased in South‑East Asia from 5% in 2020 to 9% in 2021 this was faster than Brazil, China or India, with it projected to grow at 14% per year in the next 5 years (Facebook & Bain). Even before Covid in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South‑East Asia, there was a lot of positivity (compared to what we are witnessing across the world) around the benefits of technology and the potential it can bring to peoples’ lives. Our Visual GPS research shows that people are feeling empowered by the technology available to them, it is solving problems, smartphones are being used more to transact and pay for things more than ever before. However there is one downside, continued fears around peoples’ privacy and data. Our research shows that using visuals reflecting the diversity of your audiences, that showcases authentic experiences and lifestyles can help continue this digital excitement as well as build trust around our fears of cyber‑attacks. What is data the telling us in Hong Kong, Taiwan and South‑East Asia: •70% of people feel empowered by the technology available to them and half cite how personalised tech brings pleasure and convenience to their lives. •77% of people have recently used technology to solve problems or achieve goals that used to be a struggle. •91% of people want companies taking more measures to protect their identity and privacy. •92% of people are using mobile phone more now as a way to transact and pay for things than ever before.
