It's a special week, but you might not realize it. ESPECIALLY if you were born here on US soil. But for your ol' Uncle Tommy (a naturalized US citizen)... This coming Sunday (9/17) is still one of the most meaningful of the year for me. It's... wait for it... National Citizenship Day! See, I'm a proud Canadian by birth. But California and the states... well, it beckoned me, man. The the sunny shores and free-spirited vibes became my home back way back in the 60s. But let me tell you, becoming a naturalized US citizen wasnât as simple as acing a pop quiz and humming the national anthem. It took me about 15 solid years of waiting, maneuvering through a mountain of paperwork, and, believe it or not, getting [rescued by my own pot angel]( one or two times to get that sweet, sweet American citizenship. I earned my stars and stripes, man. Even after a stint in the slammer (a story for another time), I never lost sight of my gratitude and appreciation for this nation. And look, I'm not wearing rose-tinted glasses here. The USA isn't perfect. Far from it. We've got a laundry list of issues to sort out... But we gotta remember â focusing only on the negatives (like the media seems to want us to do) doesn't make for a very happy life. It's all about perspective, man. Because even with all its quirks, I believe the USA is a magical place to be. Here's just a few reasons why I still love this country so much: - Diversity: The USA is like a buffet - a melting pot of flavors, tunes, tales, and terrain. I mean, the Rockies to Route 66, jazz to jambalaya â it's all here, man! - Opportunity: LA gave Cheech and I a stage, an audience, and our big break. Dreams? I still believe this land's fertile for 'em. - Democratic Process: Sure, politics is crazy here. But compared with so many countries, we've got it real good. At least for now, we can still rally, we can shout, and by golly, we can vote. Anyways, I hope that this week, even amidst the challenges, you find a reason to appreciate the land we call home. And speaking of love, I've got something special for you.
