You know, after yesterday's email about work-life blend, I heard back from a lot of you cousins. For those who missed it... I was talking about how instead of this whole "work-life balance" thing you here about so much these days, I prefer the idea of a "work-life blend." To me, it's about mixing the good stuff - work, play, rest - in a way that feels right for you, rather than seeing work and life as constant enemies. Many of you got back to me saying you feel very similarly. But I also heard from PLENTY of cousins who are loving their full-blown retirement after long careers. Both are perfectly good, man! But I think there's one thing we can ALL agree on... There's nothing like a good long weekend (aka, what most of us are on right now) Speaking of which, did you know the concept of a "weekend" is actually pretty new? Yeah, I got curious writing this email, so your Uncle Tommy went down a little rabbit hole on this one. (Surprise, surprise...) As you probably know, the idea of a day of rest, like the Sabbath, has been around for ages. But turns out that the modern weekend as we know it is a much more recent invention. See, back in the 1800s, most folks worked at least six days a week. But in 1908 (just 30 years before I was born, if you can believe it), a New England cotton mill became one of the first American factories to give workers both Saturday and Sunday off. Then apparently, Henry Ford adopted a five-day workweek in 1926... (Think about that... less than 100 years ago...) Then, by the 1940s, the five-day workweek became pretty standard in the US. Of course, as soon as the two-day weekend was established, people (probably a lot like your Uncle Tommy) started hoping for an extension. I mean, why stop at two days when three is so much better, right? And lot's of people do work a 4x10 shift these days... which sounds pretty damn sweet if you ask me (but no one is...) I'm sure it has its pro's and con's like anything, but every day being a 3-Day weekend has to be nice... Anyway, thanks for humoring my frequent history lessons, man. Remember, the art of the long weekend isn't about cramming in as much as possible. It's about slowing down, man. Appreciating the moment. And speaking of enjoying the moment, if you still haven't stocked up during our LABORDAY sale, you've still got plenty of time, man.
