Ever feel like dads tend to get the short end of the "celebration" stick? Well, you might be onto something, man. And I'm not just talking about the ties versus chocolates situation on Father’s Day versus Mother’s Day... (Seriously, does anyone know a dad who doesn’t have a sweet tooth? We love candy too, kids!) I was noodling around on the internet the other day (you know how much I love to do that), and I stumbled upon a fun fact: Mother’s Day became a national holiday in 1914. (1914! – It was actually signed in as an official federal holiday by Woodrow Wilson, only two months before World War I started...) Now, Father’s Day, on the other hand, took a bit longer to catch on. It actually didn't become an official holiday until 1972 (58 years after the moms, but who's counting?). And here's what's even crazier - I was already a dad by the time Father’s Day became a national holiday! I remember it well. Heck, I'm pretty sure my beard was already starting to go gray, man. But when I think about it, I'm sure most guys would agree with me that the holidays happened in the correct order. Let’s face it, men had it pretty good compared to women for a lot of the last century. Moms definitely deserved the spotlight first! Plus, if I had to pick between celebrating moms or dads, I’d go for the moms every time. They’ve got the really tough job (though us dads are great for comic relief... your mileage may vary...).
