With Father’s Day coming up, I’ve been thinking a lot about my dad, one of the best men I've ever known. Now, here’s a little irony for you: my dad was a cop. (Yep, this guy's dad was LAPD for 30 years, man. Same thing with most of my uncles. Go figure, right?) And he wasn’t just any cop. By the time he retired, my dad was the highest-ranked Hispanic detective in the LAPD. He was straight-laced and all about law and order. While I took a slightly... different approach... But even with our differences, we had a great relationship. One story I always like to share - he wasn't a fan of cannabis, but he was always asking me for free Cheech & Chong merch that he could give to to kids he worked with to help relate to them better. That's the beauty of family in my opinion. Even very different people can still come together (often because they're forced to if we're honest). It doesn’t always work out, but when it does, it’s pretty magical to see. What's so funny about all this is that my dad has been a big inspiration for my acting career too. You may not remember this, but I actually played a San Francisco cop for 6 seasons on the CBS show "Nash Bridges." Again, this is me we're talking about (so you might think it'd be a bit of a stretch). But it was actually pretty easy. All I had to do was open my mouth, and my dad just came out... It was the damnedest thing. And just recently, my new movie “The Long Game" came out. (Available to rent on all the major streaming platforms if you're interested...) I play Pollo, a World War I veteran and groundskeeper at the country club. I also drew a lot of inspiration for this role from my dad, who was a WWII vet before he went into the police force. Anyway, I digress. But with Father’s Day around the corner, I thought I'd share a few thoughts with you. Even though my dad isn't with us anymore, the older I get the more I appreciate what he did for our family. And I figure it’s a good time to appreciate the unique dynamics that make up our families, whether you're lucky enough to have a dad still around or not. Be good, Cheech   P.S.
