This new law will help students focus on academics, social development, and the world in front of them, not their screens, when they’re in school. The truth is, a majority of high school teachers and a high percentage of middle school teachers say that cell phones in classrooms are a major distraction. We also know that excessive smartphone use increases anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. So we took action. I know this is a divisive issue for some, but for us in California, I felt it was urgent to provide reasonable guidelines for smartphone use in school.
