I spent the last 5 days doing a solo holiday in Malta... Without my family... Without any friends... And without any "expectations" of what I wanted this trip to look like. I just knew one thing: I wanted to focus on "Big Picture Stuff" -- both personal and professional. So that's what I did. I thought about my purpose in life, my relationship to others, lots of deep philosophical things... And - of course - where I want to take my business in the next 6-12 months. I think this picture illustrates the "vibe" quite well. When I took it, I was reading a fantastic book by Dan Sullivan, "The 4C-s"... And it had SUCH a big influence on me, I made a vow right there to 100% live by its rules for the remainder of my trip. Now... If you've never read this (or any of Dan's other books) before... Here's the gist of it. The 4C-s stand for: - Commitment - Courage - Capability - Confidence And -- according to Dan -- that's the key journey people go through whenever they want to expand their comfort zone and grow to the next level. According to this model, whenever you face a new threat / opportunity / new situation, it will inevitably trigger FEAR... But if you Commit to doing that thing anyway (through Courage)... You'll eventually build Capability... Which builds up Confidence (regarding that previously scary thing). Then you rinse and repeat. Now... The book was primarily written for entrepreneurs... But it totally applies to our personal lives as well. And I voluntarily made it my "North Star" for the remainder of my trip... So that -- whenever I encountered a somewhat scary situation, I would COMMIT to do it anyway :) For example... I always wanted to try scuba diving... but had all sorts of fears about it. But this time I said, "Screw it, let's do it anyway!" And -- while it took Courage (including a few near panic attacks underwater) -- I've built Capability... and now have MUCH more Confidence in it. Another example... Jet skiing in open water, with relatively high (although not dangerous) waves. As soon as I felt even the slightest amount of fear because of it, I KNEW I had to do it. Another example... Talking to a gorgeous girl drinking alone at the bar at 10 pm on a Friday. Not because I wanted to pick her up... But because I was genuinely curious about what someone looking like a legit supermodel was doing alone at that time. (while NOBODY approached her, probably because they were intimidated) So as soon as I felt approach anxiety creeping up, I knew I simply HAD to go over and talk to her. So that's what I did (despite my heart racing lol!) We talked for 1-2 minutes... I got my answer... and I wished her a pleasant night :) As a result, my Confidence increased. So why am I telling you all these random stories? Because I believe this process is the true KEY to getting what we want in life. And I feel like it's especially important to talk about it because recently I've gotten so many replies from people on my list -- mainly beginners at what they do -- telling me that fear is paralyzing them from doing what they KNOW would move them forward. Instead, they're struggling with Impostor Syndrome, self-doubt, and all sorts of head trash. Please understand, this is NORMAL. Everyone struggles with this, believe it or not. Even me. Even most "gurus" you look up to. And even the people who you idolize. Heck, even Jesus Christ was seriously tempted to choose the "easy option" during his Passion. It's just a built-in mechanism in our biology. BUT... The true key lies in what you DO with your Fear. Do you let it overpower you and cause you to NOT commit? Or do you do it anyway? For example... Each time I felt FEAR... or HESITATION... I did it anyway. But in most life circumstances, that's NOT what usually happens. Most people believe that "if they feel a bunch of fear", they should just quit and not do what they were supposed to do. They often think along the lines of: "yeah, it's so easy for X, Y, Z... they're so brave, they probably don't feel fear like I do" Well, guess what? The BIG difference between you and them... Is that the people you look up to do it ANYWAY... despite all that anxiety, fear, and terror! That's right... They do it despite their fear! Remember, everyone feels fear. It's a normal part of expanding your comfort zone. But people who succeed do what they want to do anyway. Why? Because they know that -- if you give in to fear -- it just gets stronger. And next time, it's gonna be even more difficult. And their confidence drops even lower. So when you feel that nasty fear creeping up through your spine... Suffocating you with its black ugly tentacles... Whispering nasty things (like how you're a failure) in your ear... JUST DO IT ANYWAY !!! That's the key to getting what you want in life. No... It doesn't mean Fear will immediately vanish or completely disappear... But -- in Dan Sullvian's words -- if you COMMIT to do something... And you can muster up the COURAGE to face your fear after your commitment... You eventually build CAPABILITY... And that inevitably results in CONFIDENCE. So that next time, you can aim higher... And achieve even greater things. But wanna know the (morbidly) funny part? Next time you expand your comfort zone... You'll have to face your FEAR again !!!! Because -- yes -- now you have more Confidence when it comes to the thing you just did... But if you want to grow further... You'll have to face Fear AGAIN... since you don't have a lot of built-in confidence regarding that new thing just yet. So it's a never-ending dance of dragons balancing fear and courage. I wish it was different... I wish I could tell you "Yeah, you deal with it once and you're all good"... But it's just how the game is played. You can't escape it. And if you run from it, you'll miss out on living your best life. So better get used to it and face it head-on... Because that's how you WIN the Game of Conversions Life. (and after a while, you totally get used to it... in fact, when Fear shows up, you say "Hello darkness my old friend" :) So next time you face something scary -- anything -- do it anyway ;) And let me know how it goes!
