During the holiday season we tend to mull over the cost of things. [The price of turkey] is, thankfully, down, but we Americans need to be wary of other costs. President-elect Donald Trumpâs Broadway sensitivity makes us wonder about the price of [free speech], while the brutal police confrontation with Standing Rock demonstrators forces us to consider the cost of [protecting sacred land]. We should also consider the price of [violating Muslim civil rights], [the rapid radicalization of young, white men], and what effect a Trump presidency will have on [economic growth] and [the black middle class]. For New Yorkers, [the cost of Trumpâs weekend getaways in Manhattan] is already causing skyscraper-size headaches, and if youâre a Kanye fan, letâs hope you get that refund for [his canceled Saint Pablo tour]. But this time of year also reminds us of what is valuable: like celebrating underrepresented cultures, [as Disneyâs Moana does], or breaking down cultural barriers, [as âHamiltonâ did]. Watch [this trans Chicago teen cheer her heart out] to remember that embracing your voice is priceless. And when you feel like tapping the power of that voiceâsay, if youâre concerned about the cost of Trumpâs [conflicts of interest]âthereâs a [number you can call]. Time to flex those freedom muscles, team. ðª â[Anne Branigin]

During a [press conference] in which Anamarie Calagro fielded questions about her lawsuit against her daughter, Calagro pointed out that her kid could have decided to âbecome sterileâ without her knowledge. Even within the legal rubric established to allow self-sufficient young people to escape the control of the people who created them, the idea that a teenagerâs body belongs to them is terrifying from a conservative worldview.
Laws dictating family structures and adolescent agency have been altered countless times, but the primary assumptionâthat young people canât be trusted to maintain their own innocenceâremains the same. Even today, the easiest way to become legally separated from your parents is to marry. In most states, if you want to be emancipated, your parents have to draw up the paperwork and petition the court themselves. [Read more].
LET'S TALK ABOUT GIVING THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT
Itâs become cliché, but when it comes to Sharon Jones, it absolutely rings true: her music gave us life. Even in the midst of a battle with pancreatic cancer, the soul singer worked relentlessly: touring, recording, and lifting audiences around the world with [that voice]. And when Jones died this past weekend after suffering back-to-back strokes, friends, family, and band members by her bed say [she spent her last hours singing].
