The Ghostbusters reboot premiered last weekend, and yesterday, a Breitbart reporter wrote a review that sent trolls to Leslie Jonesâ Twitter for the entire day. Much like the backlash this Ghostbusters has received for its all-female cast, the article was a lazy example of sexism, but also [racism], at its worse. The ensuing social media assault on Jones, which has since forced her off Twitter, is a painful reminder that if you donât fit a white standard of beauty, youâll be scrutinized for your looks instead of your talent. Viola Davis was described as â[less classically beautiful]â in a 2014 New York Times piece that also referred to Shonda Rhimes as an âangry black woman.â And when Zendaya walked the Oscars red carpet in 2015 with [faux-dreadlocks], âFashion Policeâ co-host Giuliana Rancic said her hairstyle made it look like she smelled of patchouli oil and weed. As [Ta-Nehisi Coates] wrote earlier this year, the same racism that Nina Simone faced for her âdark skin, broad nose and full lipsâ still rules the casting rooms of Hollywood. The truth is, though, that even if a black woman manages to break through those doors, there will still be other kinds of racism to confront. Hereâs Langston Hughesâ â[Backlash Blues],â sung by Nina Simone. Her message to a society trying to defeat her is that sheâll still rise above. â[Darian Symoné Harvin]

[Why Iâm Betting $100 That Hillary Clinton Will Be a One-Term President]
by Felix Salmon
Predictably enough, the Republican National Convention had [turned into a legendary shitshow] even before it had officially begun; after that, [it got even crazier]. A few more days like this and we might start approaching UK politics levels of shambolic incompetence.
Itâs easy, and understandable, for liberals to look at the spectacle in Cleveland with schadenfreude. But the forces tearing the Republican Party apart are by no means unique to Republicans, and the current situation in the UK proves that itâs entirely possible for both major parties to fall apart at the seams simultaneously.
I now officially have a bet with Matt Yglesias, of Vox, about whether Hillary Clinton will be president on January 22, 2021. He says she will be, I say she wonât be, and the loser will donate $100 to Give Directly. [Read more]
