Here it is: I'm a patriarch, coach, and steward. I exist to help others thrive in every domain of life, believe in a bigger, better future, and become and achieve more than they ever thought possible. I do this by helping them clarify what they want, develop a plan to get it, and persevere in their pursuit. By “patriarch,” I don’t mean I’m in support of the patriarchy. I mean that I fulfill a variety of roles in my family—I’m a husband, father, grandfather, and the founder of a family business. “Patriarch” is my shorthand for all those together. I hope Gail would use the word “matriarch,” too. It’s a way of saying who I am has a generational impact. Here are a few more from my team: I am a husband and father, editor and writer, and advocate for human potential. I exist to promote understanding through open discourse and excitement about human ingenuity and possibility. I do this by literary and historical exploration, sharing what I discover through compelling stories, and encouraging others to join me in the pursuit. Can you tell I’m not the only person on my team committed to the growth of others? How about this one: I am a beloved disciple, curious explorer, and committed friend. I cultivate an expansive, playful soul, foster sanctuaries for encountering the wild, intimate love of God, and live into hope rooted in his promise of turning suffering into shalom. I accomplish this mission by offering trustworthy, tender presence, writing and speaking life, delighting in goodness all around me, and yielding to the Spirit in praying Kingdom dreams into reality. I wish you knew these team members personally so you could tell how well they fit (and because they’re outstanding people to know). Here’s one more: I am an innovative changemaker, wife, mother, and knowledge seeker. I exist to promote wonder, combat oppression of all kinds, and support collective confrontation against mediocrity, deceptions, and conformity. I do this by helping those I care about most to challenge limiting beliefs, lovingly question everything, and chase joy without apology. I love the way each of these mission statements combines aspirational and practical. Mission statements like these shape why we get out of bed in the morning. They connect us with what’s at our core, with our foundational beliefs about the world. They provide a sense of direction and purpose not just for tomorrow but for today. And that’s why a mission is an essential part of a life plan. You don’t have to be a writer to create a compelling mission statement. Not anymore. Our Mission card deck in [LifeFocus™]( not only gives you all the pieces you need, it also gamifies the process. Play along and you’ll finish with a pitch-perfect personal mission statement.
