Feel free to forward along if the spirit moves you. â
Article Iâm reading â[Jason Blum: How the producer behind the latest âExorcistâ film is making the most profitable movies in Hollywood]()â by [Devin Gordon]( for Fortune. [Click here if you have any issues reading at the above link](). Below is a snippet from the article, which applies to publishing and other industries:
â
âIn Hollywood, Blumâs company is renowned for its low-cost, high-reward âBlumhouse systemâ of moviemaking, the core of which is a simple proposition: To keep budgets downâwhich used to mean $5 million to $8 million back in the Insidious days and now means more like $10 million to $12 millionâthe creative principals work for the minimum required by union contracts (known in the industry as âscaleâ) in exchange for bonuses and back-end profits based on the filmâs performance. The bigger the profits, the bigger the bonus.
â
Itâs âbetting on yourself,â Blum likes to say. The system, he argues, gives artists creative freedom while incentivizing them to do work that resonates with audiences.
â
For directors, scale means around $300,000, a fraction of what big names command elsewhere. For a Blumhouse lead actor, itâs about $65,000 for five or six weeks of workâeven for stars accustomed to making millions per film. Thatâs the kind of deal Ethan Hawke, one of Blumâs oldest friends in the business, took to star in the first two of his three Blumhouse filmsâSinister, The Purge, and The Black Phoneâwhich grossed a combined $340 million. Hawke, the consummate indie actor of his generation, is now a very rich man. â
What Iâm watching to de-stress â[When you lied on your résumé](=).â âYou canât put this in 5BF,â I told myself for a few weeks. Then it became âHow can I NOT put this in 5BF?â Iâve had this stupid video in an open tab on my computer for much longer than Iâd care to admit. Whenever Iâm taking myself or my day too seriously, I turn up the audio and take it for a spin. This is one place where the music makes all the difference. â
Documentary Iâm watching while shaking a fist at the screen â[Boogie Man: The Lee Atwater Story](). I recently attended an event where politics was in the air, and someone recommended this doc as a tutorial in how Machiavellian campaigns are actually run, how the sausage is made, and how damage is inflicted. If you are cynical about politics, as I am, this will 10x your tendencies, but it might also make you less susceptible to the everyday deception that has become acceptable in our current systems. â
What Iâm reading to recover from the above â[Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness, and Creativity](=) by [David Lynch](). Filmmaker David Lynch describes his personal methods of capturing and working with ideas and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation. This book has been recommended to me by many high-caliber creatives, [including drummer Dave Elitch](). â
Quote Iâm pondering âHome is not where you were born; home is where all your attempts to escape cease.ââ

P.S. Next Tuesday, 10/10, is World Mental Health Day, and [Iâve created a blog post to help](). Highlighting mental health is important to me for deeply personal reasons. Treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorder, and addiction run in my family. Iâve lost multiple friends to suicide and almost committed suicide in college. Opioids and alcohol have claimed the lives of family members and some of my closest childhood friends. But despair need not lead to deaths of despair.
