Good news today for the Lions and Texans as their offensive coordinators who many thought would leave for a head coaching job have decided to stay where they are. That's a little bit of comfort to help ease the sting of missing the Super Bowl this year as both teams look forward to 2024. Our Cecil Lammey's taken a break from the Senior Bowl for a bit and has the News and Notes you need. Let's Go. DET: Ben Johnson staying with Detroit [Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero]() Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Benjamin Johnson will remain the team's offensive coordinator in 2024. Our view: Everyone expected Johnson to finally make the leap to the head-coaching ranks, but that's not going to happen yet. Instead, he will stay in Detroit with unfinished business as the Lions fell short in the NFC Championship Game. There's no guarantee they'll make it that far again, but with Johnson staying it helps their chances of a deep playoff run. [Back to Top](#top) [] 2. PIT: Arthur Smith hired by Steelers [Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero]() Former Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith was hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers as offensive coordinator Tuesday, Jan. 30. Our view: Smith can run the type of offense HC Mike Tomlin wants, and they'll feature the ground game early and often. We'll see if QB Kenny Pickett is the starter or if the Steelers make a move for someone who could be available (after he's released) like veteran QB Russell Wilson. [Back to Top](#top) [] 3. SF: George Kittle day-to-day [Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Eric Branch]() San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (toe) is considered day-to-day because of a toe injury, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Our view: Kittle has some time to recover as the 49ers prepare for the Chiefs on Super Bowl Sunday. We'll know more in about 10 days or so how Kittle is doing in his recovery from this toe injury. Stay tuned. [Back to Top](#top) [] 4. DET: Jared Goff hopes for new deal [Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Charean Williams]( Detroit Lions QB Jared Goff said he hopes to sign a long-term contract extension with the Lions but it will be up to his representatives and the team to reach an agreement. Our view: Lions' OC Ben Johnson is staying in Detroit, so the team could continue to have great success with Goff running the show. In 2024, Goff has a cap hit of $31.6MM with only $5MM in dead money. [Back to Top](#top) [] 5. MIN: T.J. Hockenson undergoes surgery [Source: Vikings.com](=) Minnesota Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson (knee) underwent surgery Monday, Jan. 29, to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament. Our view: Hockenson was injured in late December and waited just over a month to have surgery. That puts his start of the 2024 season in doubt, and there's a chance Hockenson could begin on the Physically Unable to Perform List. [Back to Top](#top) [] 6. NE: Mac Jones' option unlikely to be exercised [Source: MassLive.com - Mark Daniels]() New England Patriots QB Mac Jones is not expected to have his fifth-year option exercised this offseason, according to a source. Our view: No surprise here. The former first-round pick just isn't that good, and he's got a reputation as a dirty player to boot. We'll see what the Patriots do at quarterback this offseason, but Jones is not part of their future plans. [Back to Top](#top) [] 7. BUF: Bobby Babich promoted to DC [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport]() Buffalo Bills linebackers coach Bobby Babich was promoted to defensive coordinator Tuesday, Jan. 30. Our view: Babich has worked for the Bills, and he's impressed as he's moved through the coaching ranks. The team struggled with injuries on that side of the ball in 2023, but Babich could be running a top-10 unit in 2024. [Back to Top](#top) [] 8. NE: New England interviews Luke Getsy [Source: SI.com - Albert Breer](=) Former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy interviewed for the New England Patriots offensive coordinator job Tuesday, Jan. 31. Our view: Let's see what the Patriots do at quarterback, as Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe are not the answer. Getsy did not get the most from QB Justin Fields, so working with a bad quarterback or young quarterback (Jayden Daniels?) may not be as interesting as going to work with a seasoned veteran. The Saints (with QB Derek Carr) are interested in Getsy as well. [Back to Top](#top) = 🕶️ NFL Draft Sleepers at the Shrine Bowl! (Remember These Names) The Shrine Bowl has produced NFL Stars and Draft Sleepers like Zay Flowers, Isiah Pacheco, and Aidan O'Connell. Join Sigmund Bloom and Cecil Lammey as they take a look at the future of the NFL and Fantasy Football at the 2024 Shrine Bowl! [[youtube]](=) [] 9. HOU: Bobby Slowik remaining in Houston [Source: SI.com - Albert Breer](=) Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik agreed to a new deal that keeps him with the team until at least 2025, according to sources Tuesday, Jan. 30. Our view: Interesting in the two hot coordinators in Slowik and Ben Johnson both opt to stay where they are. Great news for the Texans and C.J. Stroud. [Back to Top](#top) [] 10. NO: Greg Lewis interviewing with Saints [Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero]() Baltimore Ravens wide receivers coach Greg Lewis is interviewing for the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator position Tuesday, Jan. 30. Our view: Lewis could go back to New Orleans after spending quality time with the Chiefs and the Ravens. A former player, Lewis began his coaching career as an assistant to former Saints HC Sean Payton. [Back to Top](#top) [] 11. WAS: Aaron Glenn meeting again with WAS [Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter]( Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn has a second interview with the Washington Commanders for their head coach vacancy Tuesday, Jan. 30. Our view: The Commanders could not get Lions OC Ben Johnson as their head coach, but they might get the Lions' DC. Glenn has been considered a future head coach for at least a few years now. After going with a defensive-minded coach in Ron Rivera, it would be interesting if Washington got another like him in Glenn. [Back to Top](#top) [] 12. LAR: Brandon Staley interviewing for Rams DC [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport](=) Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley will interview for the Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator vacancy Wednesday, Jan. 31. Our view: Staley worked with the Rams previously and then was catapulted to his job as head coach of the Chargers. With Raheem Morris moving on to be the head coach of the Falcons, the Rams could go back to Staley. [Back to Top](#top) [] 13. TEN: Dennard Wilson interviewing with Titans [Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport]() Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson is interviewing with the Tennessee Titans Tuesday, Jan. 30, for their defensive coordinator position. Our view: Wilson has about four teams after his services this offseason. Having great success with the Ravens will get you noticed, and Wilson is likely to take the next step this offseason. [Back to Top](#top) [] 14. NO: Luke Getsy has second interview with Saints [Source: SI.com - Albert Breer](=) Former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy will interview for the New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator vacancy Wednesday, Jan. 31. Our view: Getsy failed with the Bears, but he's getting enough interest this offseason to land a job soon. The Saints are looking for someone to get the most out of QB Derek Carr, and Getsy could be that guy. [Back to Top](#top) That'll do it for today, Folks.
