[NYJ - Elijah Moore injures quad]() Source: The Athletic - Connor Hughes New York Jets WR Elijah Moore (quadriceps) left practice early Thursday, Aug. 12, with a quadriceps injury, according to head coach Robert Saleh. He will undergo an MRI later Thursday and could miss the the Jets' preseason opener Saturday against the New York Giants. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Fantasy GMs are up in arms with this news. Moore has been one of the most talked about players in Jets camp and he's been standing out in practice. We'll know more about the severity of his quad injury after results of the MRI are revealed. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 2. [BAL - Rashod Bateman to have surgery](=) Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley Updating previous reports, Baltimore Ravens WR Rashod Bateman (groin) will undergo groin surgery and is expected to return sometime in September, head coach John Harbaugh said Thursday, Aug. 12. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Returning in September doesn't mean it will be the start of the regular season. Sometime in September also doesn't mean Bateman will look like himself immediately upon his return. Fantasy GMs in most leagues will have to keep the talented rookie on the waiver wire speed dial. He's going to miss some time but with his route-running ability and secure hands we could see him thrive towards the end of the year. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 3. [DAL - QB Dak Prescott expected back next week]( Source: ESPN.com - Todd Archer Updating an ongoing story, Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (shoulder) has thrown for consecutive days in practice for the first time since suffering the shoulder injury July 28. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Good news for the Cowboys and Fantasy GMs here. Prescott is on track to return to a full practice schedule next week. There is a chance Prescott will return to face the Houston Texans during the Aug. 21 preseason game. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 4. [NO - WR Michael Thomas meets with coach]( Source: Yahoo! Sports - Charles Robinson New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas met with head coach Sean Payton recently, and the two sides are working toward a resolution of their differences. 'They had a good talk about [the issues],' one source said. 'I think they both believe it's not anything that has to go any further than what is already out there. There was some frustration from both viewpoints, and that was the point of the meeting.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Thomas didn't return phone calls from the team this offseason and then showed up to camp with an ankle that needed surgery. The team wanted to keep tabs on him in the offseason but there was something behind the scenes preventing Thomas from answering their calls. Clearing the air is nothing but a good thing, but there are many around the NFL who think Thomas will move on from the Saints in 2022 (there's a potential out in his contract after this year per Spotrac). Stay tuned. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 5. [DAL - QB Dak Prescott says he'll be ready]( Source: NFL Network - Tom Pelissero Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (shoulder) remains out of team drills in training camp, but said he fully plans to be ready for the team's Sept. 9 regular-season opener. 'There's no doubt, and that's the purpose of taking it slow and being cautious, that the moment I kick back and I get going again that it's not going to be lingering, there's not going to be problems and that's playing safe and being cautious with it,' Prescott said in an interview published Thursday, Aug. 12. 'I'm just trying to play it smart and make sure I'm out there. Last year was a tough year, and I never want to miss that much football again. If I can do anything to help it and to be out there with my teammates, I'm going to do exactly that.' [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Fingers crossed here. If you've watched Hard Knocks on HBO, missing time is killing Prescott. He's driven to deliver this year after his injury last season. The Cowboys know their season depends on the QB and they'll be cautious here. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 6. [CIN - Joe Burrow could play in preseason](=) Source: ESPN.com - Ben Baby Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow on Thursday, Aug. 12, was ruled out of the team's preseason opener Saturday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but head coach Zac Taylor left the door open for Burrow playing in the final two exhibition contests. 'I'm not ready to rule anything out for future games,' Taylor said. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] We'll see if that happens because it could go either way. Burrow is still coming back from his knee injury suffered last season and there's no need to push things in the preseason. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 7. [NYG - QB Daniel Jones to sit out game]() Source: NFL.com - Michael Baca New York Giants QB Daniel Jones (coach's decision) won't play Saturday, Aug. 14, in the team's preseason opener against the New York Jets. QB Mike Glennon will get the start and will be spelled by QB Clayton Thorson. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's an interesting decision from the Giants to be sure. Jones is in a make-or-break season with the team and could use all the reps he can get. We'll see what Jones can do when he gets into game action. Having a healthy RB Saquon Barkley and WR Kenny Golladay will help. [LAC - No preseason for Justin Herbert]() Source: NFL Network - Taylor Bisciotti Los Angeles Chargers QB Justin Herbert won't play in any of the team's three preseason games, head coach Brandon Staley said Thursday, Aug. 12. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] It's interesting Herbert won't get any snaps in during the preseason. Most franchise quarterbacks are missing the first game but should play in at least one quarter or one game. Herbert is going to wait until the start of the regular season. The offense is going to run through Herbert, and we should see elements of no-huddle and tempo used as a weapon just like Herbert was used to in college at Oregon. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 9. [NE - Pats QBs to play in preseason opener](=) Source: ESPN.com - Mike Reiss New England Patriots QBs Cam Newton and Mac Jones will both play in the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 12. Head coach Bill Belichick has previously said that Newton is the team's starting quarterback, so Newton would be expected to take initial snaps. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] How long does Newton stay the starter? That's the main question for Patriots fans and Fantasy GMs this year. Newton looked bad as the starter last year, and the team selected Jones in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft to be a potential franchise quarterback. Jones fits what OC Josh McDaniels wants to do and it seems like only a matter of time before the rookie takes over. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 10. [KC - QB Patrick Mahomes to play a quarter]() Source: ProFootballTalk.com - Myles Simmons Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes and the team's healthy starters likely will play a quarter in the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 14, against the San Francisco 49ers, head coach Andy Reid said Thursday, [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] There's only three preseason games this year but it's still a bit surprising that Mahomes would play that long in the opener. We'll see what Mahomes looks like behind that revamped offensive line as he gets ready to dominate another season in the NFL. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 11. [JAX - Coach: Jags' QB competition still open](=) Source: ESPN.com - Michael DiRocco Jacksonville Jaguars QBs Trevor Lawrence and Gardner Minshew are in a open competition to start in Week 1 of the regular season, head coach Urban Meyer said Thursday, Aug. 12. Meyer said the starter for Saturday night's preseason opener will be announced later Thursday. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] He can't be serious, right? Minshew is a nice player but Lawrence is a generational talent and one of those "can't miss" quarterbacks coming into the league like Andrew Luck was coming out of Stanford years ago. We have a feeling that Lawrence will be the starter for the Jaguars in Week 1. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 12. [LVR - QB Marcus Mariota dealing with sore leg]( Source: The Athletic - Tashan Reed Las Vegas Raiders QB Marcus Mariota (leg) is dealing with a sore leg, head coach Jon Gruden said Thursday, Aug. 12, and his status is questionable for Saturday's preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] The Raiders could shut down Mariota for this first preseason game. That means Nathan Peterman would get more (much needed) work in a reserve role behind starter Derek Carr. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 13. [TEN - QB Ryan Tannehill likely to skip preseason game](=) Source: ESPN.com - Turron Davenport Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Tannehill is not expected to play in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 13, according to head coach Mike Vrabel. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] Zero surprise here. Tannehill is a seasoned pro and doesn't need all the reps in the preseason. They will get him ready for preseason game no.2 and then likely shut him down until the start of the regular season. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- [] 14. [DET - TE T.J. Hockenson expected to miss preseason opener]() Source: DetroitLions.com - Tim Twentyman and Mike O'Hara Detroit Lions TE T.J. Hockenson (undisclosed) suffered an undisclosed injury in practice Tuesday, Aug. 10. [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] There's no telling what the injury is as it's undisclosed. Lions head coach Dan Campbell said the injury was minor, but it is believed Hockenson will be held out of the preseason opener Friday, Aug. 13. [Back to Top](#top) --------------------------------------------------------------- That'll do it for today, Folks. I hope you have a great weekend and thanks for being part of the Footballguys Family. We'll see you tomorrow with the Update.
