An Inside Look at The Motley Fool’s Top Stock Picking Service If you're like me, you hate buying a car because you’re not sure if the salesperson is only telling you part of the story – only what you want to hear. Are they hiding the bad? It’s the same with dozens of other professions that have insider knowledge that we don't. It’s hard to know who to trust, right? And that includes people who give investing guidance, like The Motley Fool. Are they hiding the bad? As an employee of the Fool, I have about as much knowledge of the situation as anyone. So today I'm going to throw the door open to Motley Fool Stock Advisor to give you a look inside, and a glimpse at some things only members normally see. The bad, the good, and the sublime Heck, I’ll even start with some of the “bad.” For instance, you may have seen this in our ads: Stock Advisor, which has recommended two stocks each month since 2002, has achieved 726.5% average returns, more than quadrupling the S&P 500's performance over that 22-year period. That’s great! But that remarkable performance was not achieved without ups and downs. We’ve had long stretches of red (bad) and long stretches of green (good). Mostly it was somewhere in between. That is simply the way it is with stock investing. Please don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise. If you’re going to participate in what I call the greatest wealth machine available to regular folks like you and me, you have to expect (and even embrace) some volatility. As of this writing, 67% of SA’s recommendations are in positive territory. That means about one of every three of picks is currently in the red. And some of those have been extremely disappointing, losing 90% or more. (Though thankfully that’s happened very few times over 22 years.) But as I said, winners and losers are part of stock investing, and we want you to know that. The monster returns Stock Advisor is famous for, like: - Nvidia (recommended April 2005), +72,163% - Netflix (Dec. 2004), +27,049% - Amazon (Sep. 2002), +23,823 - Booking Holdings (May 2004), +16,714 - Tesla (Nov. 2012), +11,169% - Nvidia again (Jan. 2017), +4,502 ...did not happen overnight. Each of these companies went through several years of ups and downs on the way to producing these life-changing returns for shareholders. This is why Stock Advisor recommends their members buy stocks with the intention of holding at least five years. We also recommend buying several Stock Advisor recommendations over time, aiming to diversify risk, make up for the losers, and increase the chances of grabbing some of those huge winners. Conclusion I wanted to lay everything out for you in a straightforward manner with no hype -- this is an article about trust, after all. Only now will I give you my personal opinions. There are no fast paths to riches out there that do not involve unacceptable levels of risk. I believe your best chance at financial freedom is to take a long-term view, diversify your holdings, and add new savings to your portfolio regularly. This is what we teach at Stock Advisor and I think we can be a great guide for you throughout your investing journey. Flesch reading score measures how complex a text is. The lower the score, the more difficult the text is to read. The Flesch readability score uses the average length of your sentences (measured by the number of words) and the average number of syllables per word in an equation to calculate the reading ease. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
