40% OFF these Type Director’s rising stars list. Look behind-the-scenes on how a Type Director thinks! [View in Browser]( Type Director’s Cut Welcome to the first Type Director's Cut! Want to get a behind-the-scenes look into how a Type Director thinks? Now is your chance! [Browse]( [Font Lists]( [Deals]( [Learning]( [Web Fonts]( [Type Director's Cut]( Fonts used: [Helvetica® Now]( There were so many wonderful fonts that debuted in 2021, but some of them especially stood out. See which fonts made the rising stars list of these Monotype Type Directors. We are highlighting Charles Nix, Phil Garnham, and Tom Foley's rising stars lists, find out what they had to say about these fonts and why they chose them below! [Shop ALL Director’s Cut Deals]( Charles Nix’s Choices [Onamura]( Onamura by Balibilly Design Onamura has all of the organic meandering lines and push-pull vitality of Art Nouveau lettering, but rather than being a dogmatic revival of some forgotten specimen, it’s a sort of archeological unearthing and exciting blend of Nouveau’s Japanese and Medieval influences. I Wayan Bill Nati and Balibilly Design have given it what I’d call a “deep bench”—tons of stylistic alternates and a breadth of weights that will allow designers to paint with type—basking in the revery of a host of new typographic expressions. 11 fonts for $49 $29.40 [Shop Onamura Now]( [Change Serif]( Change Serif by Borutta Group There are a group of us who fawn over typographic color—that difficult to achieve rhythm and melody in text that is a sort of grail for book designers. Change Serif has beautiful color. And it has the kind of exhaustive glyph set, stylistic alternates, and range of weights that instill the confidence that it can handle any content a publisher wants to throw at it. It’s a rare achievement in a type family: a quiet, exquisite competence. It shouldn't go unheralded. So—hats off to Mateusz Machalski and the Borutta Group. 10 fonts for $290 $174 [Shop Change Serif Now]( Phil Garnham’s Choices [The Seasons]( The Seasons by My Creative Land Elena Genova has created a hidden gem in serif display typography. This typeface is a delicate amiable serif, its old-style stress and proportions are perfectly balanced, it’s the next 5* hotel brand maker. The swooping and unexpected extreme italics styles are enthusiastic, they are restrained and slick but offer just enough distinction to set you apart from the crowd. 6 fonts for $58 $34.80 [The Seasons Now]( [Nighty]( Nighty by Ahmad Jamaludin The arts and crafts movement is back and so is retro positivity. This typeface combines the soft-serve squishiness of the seventies with art nouveau amorphous gestures. It’s also an incredibly joyful personality and that’s what we all so desperately need right now. Lovely stuff. 1 font for $17 $10.20 [Shop Nighty Now]( [Abygaer]( Abygaer by Sealoung This serif font goes beyond its inherent scope, to be readable, to be legible, to be unnoticed. Languid letterforms are fluid, whimsical and elegant, they create a chic levity that enables sweet lockups and sharp headlines. Abygaer is one of those fonts that furthers the 'Languid Serif' conversation, encouraging designers to go beyond expectations. 1 font for $25 $15 [Shop Abygaer Now]( Tom Foley’s Choices [Alfreda]( Alfreda by Santi Rey A cool and confident twist on the grotesque model. This wonderfully weird grotesque is very much on trend and offers a refreshing choice in the seemingly limitless grotesque options available today. Fresh, confident, and playful. I love the twisted and unconventionally placed contrast, the calligraphic inspired flourishes and strike troughs – it has a lot going on, but it works. Great for brands or campaigns searching for a youthful expression and makes for striking editorial headlines. 6 fonts for $140 $84 [Shop Alfreda Now]( [Calvino]( Calvino by Zetafonts Serifs are on the rise again, and it's no surprise when you see designs like Calvino. Grounded in 16th C Geralde print faces, Andrea Tartarelli’s Calvino combines renaissance principles of legibility with expressive calligraphic elements inspired by the work of Gudrun Zapf. The result is something familiar yet original, a balance of Tartarelli’s hand and expression applied to a broad range of weights and optical sizes. This family has some lovely original moments – The reductive features of monoline style, the underbidding terminals on characters like C and G, the sharp corners on the exit strokes of the Grande Italic. These idiosyncrasies are held together by the underlying renaissance proportions and the high level of craft. Calvino is a stylish typeface, great editorial design and brands looking for some punch. 38 fonts for $215 $129 [Shop Calvino Now]( [Codelia]( Codelia by Tabular Type Constraints can sometimes push designers to innovate and explore creative boundaries. Codelia is a great example of this – a typeface designed to push and re-frame what a typeface for Coding should, and can, look like. Designer Toshi Omagari finds room for originality, expression and playfulness, while not compromising on the need for supremely legible letterforms, and the weights and styles required to support clear hierarchy and easy navigation of complex code. An exuberant design that is functional and easy on the eye. Lovely. 26 fonts for $299.99 $179.99 [Shop Codelia Now]( Shop all [Type Director's Cut Deals]( Now!
