I've been busy lately with work. This happens from time to time. I come up with some project and go full tilt at it until it's underway. I like these projects. It's similar to the excitement of launching a new site. Tons of hope and optimism. I'm definitely a glass is half-full person. There's one downside to these busy sprints though. These sprints impede my creativity. All my brain power, what little I have, is dedicated to the project. I end up with nothing left in the tank to write articles, emails and tweets. I have the energy; I just don't come up with stuff worth writing about. --------------------------------------------------------------- -PAID AD- ¢Â€Â‹ Get 10% off your first order with Content Pit! That's because I only send one when I have something to say. And yes, I'm getting to the reason of the email which is "If it weren't for this I'd be nowhere". The "this" in today's subject line is keyword research software. On so many levels KW software is a game changer for me. Makes it all possible. On one level, I can find article topics without having to think too much. If I have nothing left in the creativity tank, I can still find article topics. On another level, I discover great content opportunities. On yet another level, this software makes it possible to scale content across many niche sites. I'm all for dreaming up my own topics. I do it regularly. These are topics I want to write about. Fun stuff. But I almost always run it through KW software to find the best keyword to go after. It's silly not too. On days like today when I come up empty, it's KW research software to the rescue. What KW software should you use? I've lost track of all our options. It seems every month there's another KW research platform promising to find all the undiscovered long tails. I usually give 'em a shot on a free trial basis. Most are decent but I seldom whip out my wallet because I find all I need with my current fleet of KW software tools. I currently use: - Google autosuggest (it's manual but it's still good) - Ahrefs - Keywordchef - Keywordshitter I've tried so many others. I'm not saying the others aren't good. They are good but I don't need them. For example, I just hired someone to help out with adding Google Search Console terms to my posts. It's a part time position (10 hrs. per week). She does this for other clients. She seems very good at it. She told me she likes using Ubersuggest for additional KW research. I'm an Ahrefs guy. But I bet Ubersuggest is just as or nearly as good. I'm sure I would get the same results with Ubersuggest as I do with Ahrefs if I took the time to learn Ubersuggest. You don't have to find all the keywords. You just need to find enough for your next good article. I usually stop there. If you're on a roll and come up with 30,000 KWs, awesome. I've come up with a thousand KWs in a sitting. Those are great sessions but more the exception than the rule. I spent years spinning my wheels coming up with my own topics I was shortsighted in my early days. I didn't use KW software. I didn't want to pay for it. I thought Ahrefs was outrageously expensive. Back then I was paying $5/month for hosting. That was it. $100 per month for software seemed like a total ripoff. "How could software possibly do a better job than me" I thought. My guess is I lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in ad revenue to save a few thousand dollars on KW software. That's classic penny wise, pound foolish. It's not that I didn't come up with good topics on my own. I did. The problem was the topics were so competitive that there was no way I would ever rank for them. It was by pure accident I discovered the power of the obscure long tail article. I dreamed up some topics on my own that ended up getting decent traffic fairly fast. I got lucky that they targeted solid, long tails. I still remember the exact moment when it dawned on me as I dug into Google Analytics and realized what was happening. That's the moment it all came together. It wasn't one article. It was about 10 to 20 articles that started performing really well. I signed up for Ahrefs that day and haven't looked back. This is not a RA-RA Ahrefs email. Ahrefs didn't pay me to write this. I'm telling you this because KW software helped me a ton. Once I dug into Ahrefs, my mind was blown with what it could do. I kicked myself for not subscribing sooner. I spent hours trying all different approaches to finding great topics that I could rank for pretty fast. To date I have 20 proven keyword research methods. Not only did learning and using Ahrefs work but I loved the process; the excitement of finding great KW opportunities. I still love the process. I've probably used Ahrefs and/or other KW software at some point every working day since. Okay, that's a stretch but you get the point. I've since become a bit of a software hound I use all kinds of software these days. Social media posting software. Photo editing software. Email software. Affiliate software. I'm not unique in this. Many of you do too. I end up spending a decent chunk of my time testing new software. And yet, despite my Ahrefs fiasco years ago and my penchant for trying software, I've ignored one of the most powerful software platforms ever. I've known about it for a few years but dismissed it as not helpful for what I do. It's Ahrefs all over. I came up with a new project for my niche sites and remembered that this particular software was available. I fired up a free account. Once again my mind is blown. I thought it might help but I didn't realize to what extent. I'm surprised this stuff is legal. It's way too early for me to give specifics. I'm not sure this project will work but the potential with the software is considerable. I'll say this. My aim with it is to take my content quality to the next level for free without much work. The kind of stuff Google loves. And no, it's not AI content software. It's the opposite of AI. Stay tuned. Speaking of AI content, I totally dropped the ball by not following up with my "million word website" case study. I'll provide a follow up shortly.
