Mine was okay - ended up= being super busy over the weekend though, to the point where I thought Mon= day was Wednesday and don't even ask me what day this is. I've= been thinking a lot about what Fark is, how long we've been around for, an= d the impact it's had on so many lives. Before I start I'd like to pu= t a couple things out there: 1) I don't claim credit for this and 2) I can'= t claim credit for having tried to make Fark this. Because I don't kn= ow how it happened and I wasn't trying to do it. I figure the rest of= you just did it on your own somehow. Fark has always been an unusua= l community. When people ask me what most Farkers are like, I tell th= em there's no simple answer. It's even more complicated now that we h= ave a bunch of Zoomers running around in the mix. Best I can narrow i= t down is most Farkers are smarter than the average bear, have quick wit, a= nd are natural skeptics. After that though, there's a wide range.&nbs= p; Many Farkers don't fit into any simple description whatsoever. &nbs= p; But nearly everyone has big hearts, whether it's immediately obvious or = not. I first really noticed it during Katrina, when Farkers fa= rther inland set up an organic help thread to link up with other Farkers ev= acuating from the hurricane's path. It's happened hundreds of times s= ince. Total strangers reaching out to help people they've never met.&= nbsp; And then a funny thing happens - then they somehow become lifelong fr= iends. When I was still on Facebook regularly I could see about six o= r seven cohorts of folks who had all been super active on Fark at the same = points in time over the years, just based on who was friends with whom.&nbs= p;And I can't even count how many marriages and kids are here because you a= ll met on Fark. Like many things in life, the cohorts ch= ange over the years as circumstances change, jobs change, lives change, peo= ple wander off, it happens. Blizzard Entertainment spent over a decad= e researching the phenomenon of why people eventually wander away from a pl= atform, World of Warcraft in their case. They polled thousands of for= mer players to find out why they left, and it turns out the vast majority o= f them left for no particular single reason - job changes, got married, fou= nd a new hobby. But after that, the most common reason folks left is = because not enough of their friends were around anymore, because their frie= nds got busy elsewhere. We're happy to say though that = new people are still finding us, especially Zoomers, and more folks are wan= dering back. They're surprised we're still here after all these = years and pleasantly surprised that we're still much better than a lot of o= ther places on the internet. We're glad for those of you who have stuck aro= und for the long haul, and we're glad for our new folks and returned folks.= You all keep us going! In other discussions with friends= this week it came up that it sucks that we don't have a lot of reasons to = get together in real life. I had a bar conversation last night with a frien= d who is also 50ish on the topic of how many more whole days will we spend = with our parents over the rest of our/their lives? Because that numbe= r could end up being zero if we don't make time for it. Get together = for no good reason while it's still possible. I really don't k= now how Fark became this. But I'm glad it did. It makes keeping= Fark going seem like less of a job and more of a purpose. Again, I c= an't take credit for it, but I'm still damn proud of it. And o= n that note, we're still working out the details on the Fark25 celebration = in Lexington, Kentucky on October 12. Its Columbus Day weekend s= o there's an extra travel day if that helps! If you're looking for an oppor= tunity to get together just for the hell of it, we hope it's a good weekend= for it and we'd love to see you there. _________________= _______ End Drew transmission ______= __________________ Top Interact= ions Some of the best interactions from the past week. Well, one did, anyway. = On the Quiz itself, no one beat our admin high score of 1019 by Two Dogs Farking, who I think greenlit most of the articles the = questions came from. SoundOfOneHandWanking made first with= 936. followed by TheMothership in second with 930 an= d Hots_Kebabs in third with 920. thisnam= ewasnottaken was right behind in fourth with 919, and Oak made fifth with 916. The hardest question on la= st week's Hard Quiz was about the continuing adventures of Florida Man. Onl= y 24% of quiztakers caught the article about the "extremely amped up" man w= ho drove into the Martin County Jail lobby last week to distribute rubber s= nakes and cell phones before threatening to light himself on fire, and knew= that his apparel choice was limited to a woman's top of unknown provenance= . Personally I suspect it was related to a topless Florida Woman from= another story that just wasn't newsworthy in this day and age.&n= bsp; The easiest question on last week's Hard Quiz was about the ne= wly elected Claudia Scheinbaum, 88% of quiztakers knew that she was th= e new president-elect of Mexico, the first woman and first Jewish person to= be elected to the position. There was some question in certain circles abo= ut whether she was actually a practicing Jew when (I swear I'm not making t= his up) she tweeted thanks to Jesús for sticking by her, until other= s pointed out (still not making this up) her husband is named Jes&uacu= te;s. The hardest question on last week's Easy Quiz was about= the new "Tiana's Bayou Adventure" ride at Disneyland and Disney World. Onl= y 56% of quiztakers knew that the ride was a re-skin of Splash Mountai= n that came about because of Disney CEO Bob Eiger's desire to eliminate "So= ng of the South", the movie Splash Mountain was themed for, from the collec= tive American consciousness. The easiest question on last wee= k's Easy Quiz was about really big gas stations and why, for some reason, j= ust as we're beginning to transition to electric vehicles, someone thought = it would be a great idea to open a gas station with 120 pumps. 88% of quizt= akers knew that the Luling, TX would soon be the home of the world's larges= t Buc-ee's, at least until an even bigger one opens in Ocala, FL next = year, which I'm sure won't result in any Florida Man stories on Fark's main= page. If you missed out last week, now's a great time to [catch up on the Fark Wei= rd News Quiz](3D") now that you know a few of the answers. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
