According to , one of the leading journalists covering the business of streaming TV, Netflix release

According to [Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw]( one of the leading journalists covering the business of streaming TV, Netflix released 130-ish fewer original programs in 2023 than it did in 2022. That’s a staggering amount, but don’t take a bite of your bagel when you see this next stat that puts it all in perspective, lest you choke: That 130 figure is just a 16% percent drop from the year before, when it topped 800 original series, specials, and documentaries. I’ll save you the math. Netflix still released around 700 originals last year, which works out to about two originals per day. Needless to say, I did not watch all of them. Here’s what to watch this week. -Tim   Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!   SERIES PREMIERES TUESDAY AT 9/8C ON HULU AND DISNEY+ [Echo marks a potential big change for Marvel TV and Disney+]( [In 2021, Hawkeye introduced the world to Alaqua Cox, who made her acting debut as Maya Lopez — also known as the superhero Echo. Now, Cox, who is deaf and Native American, like her character, is starring in a series focused on Maya's origin story. Echo is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 5, and also features Chaske Spencer, Tantoo Cardinal, Devery Jacobs, and Cody Lightning. The series is a Disney+ Original, but you can watch the full first season on Hulu the same day it drops on Disney+, a sign that it's going to be a little more violent and mature than your typical Disney+ fare. -Kat Moon]( SEASON 4 PREMIERES SUNDAY AT 9/8C ON HBO, MAX [True Detective is back in more ways than one]( If you were nervous about the new season of True Detective not being good after the disappointments of Seasons 2 and 3 following the excellent first season, welcome to the club. But guess what? Season 4 is great. The new setting — Alaska — and fresh detective duo played by Jodie Foster and Kali Reis certainly inject energy into a franchise that I had left for dead, but the real star here is Issa López, the acclaimed Mexican director who helmed and wrote all six episodes of this new chapter, instilling her keen ability to capture dread and tension into a crime story that flirts with the supernatural. [As Keith Phipps says in his review]( Season 4 is a return to form. For more information, [check out our guide to Season 4](. SERIES PREMIERE SUNDAY ON AMC+, ACORN TV, OR SUNDAY AT 9/8C ON AMC [Monsieur Spade is a classic detective story with an even more classic lead]( Scott Frank, the legendary screenwriter who dominated streaming for a while with his Netflix miniseries The Queen’s Gambit (and then [saw Netflix reject his next several pitches]( gee, thanks), returns with this new series on AMC that follows the legendary detective Sam Spade during his retirement in France in 1963. But quelle surprise, Spade’s quiet life is disrupted when he gets wrapped up in a murder case involving the deaths of six nuns at a local convent. There are only a few actors alive today worthy of filling Spade’s shoes, and Frank got one of them: Clive Owen. Though it’s not bells-and-whistles action, the series is refreshingly transportive: Frank’s steady, intentionally old-fashioned tone; Owen’s commanding silver screen presence; and the meticulously recreated early ‘60s of the French countryside mix for a series that oozes old school cool. NEW YEAR, NEW YOU, NEW TV [The shows we’re looking forward to most in 2024]( [Happy new year! And even happier new TV. We looked at the release calendar for 2024 and selected the shows we’re anticipating most this year. Some are returning (House of the Dragon, Bridgerton), but most are exciting new series that are starting as soon as this weekend. Take a look at the shows and make your vacation plans around them.]( [Privacy Policy]( | [Terms of Service]( | [View in Browser]( [Unsubscribe]( © 2024 TV Guide, A Fandom, Inc. company.
