Happy 21st birthday to NCIS! And 10th birthday to NCIS: New Orleans. And 22nd birthday to CSI: Miami, 11th birthday to The Blacklist, and 29th birthday to JAG. Though only one of those shows is still on the air (NCIS), procedural television shows will never go away, because everyone loves a case that can be solved in 44 minutes plus commercials. NBCâs Chicago shows return this week, as do both 9-1-1s, proving that the case-of-the-week format is so lucrative because of its simplicity. Good guys are good, bad guys are bad, professional and personal relationships are complicated, roll credits, get back to your life, and a megaproducer cashes a fat check. Hereâs what to watch this week. -Tim Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide! SERIES PREMIERES TUESDAY ON NETFLIX [In Penelope, a teen girl touches grass]( [If I could, I would pack up a rucksack, give the middle finger to modern society, and head into the woods for a little spiritual cleansing and peace and quiet. But thereâs too much TV to watch, so I canât. Luckily, I can watch TV shows about people doing things I wish I could do, so I will be keeping an eye on Netflixâs very quiet release of Penelope, which feels like Into the Wild for todayâs kids. The coming-of-age series, which comes from Mel Eslyn and Mark Duplass, follows disillusioned 16-year-old Penelope (Megan Stott) as she heads into the Washington wilderness to find herself and hug some trees. Boy oh boy does that sound nice.](
SERIES PREMIERES THURSDAY AT 9/8C ON ABC [Doctor Odyssey is⦠what the heck is Doctor Odyssey!?!?]( Despite being burnt in the past, Iâm still a sucker for a super secretive TV project. Ryan Murphyâs new broadcast drama Doctor Odyssey has, for some reason I cannot understand, been shrouded in mystery ever since its announcement a long time ago. What weâve always known is that Joshua Jackson stars as a medical doctor on a cruise ship, where he must treat patients while miles away from terra firma. Thatâs it! Or is it? Is there more to it? A [trailer]( and promotional images were only just released, and screeners have not been sent out to dear old me. Why!?!? What are you hiding, Ryan Murphy? If this thing is just a standard procedural and doesnât have mythological sea creatures in it or Jackson time-traveling, Iâm going to be bummed. Murphyâs busy AF: His other big ABC procedural, 9-1-1, returns for its second season on ABC in the time slot just before Doctor Odyssey, and his new horror series Grotesquerie premieres on FX the day before.
SERIES PREMIERES THURSDAY ON NETFLIX [Nobody Wants This is a fast-talking Los Angeles-based rom-com]( [A podcaster and a rabbi walk into a bar... is essentially the setup for this rom-com starring '00s breakouts Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars) and Adam Brody (The O.C.). She runs a sex advice podcast, he's a man of faith, they're both not very good at relationships, and you know where this is going. Nobody Wants This is sorta based on creator Erin Foster's life, and emphasizes that good things in life are hard. And that everyone in Los Angeles is extremely witty. For fans of New Girl and anything Kristen Bell has been in.]( TRICKS AND TREATS [Everything coming to and leaving Hulu in October]( The fall is always huge for Hulu. Youâll probably be using it for next-day streaming of many of the new fall shows, but make some time for some Hulu originals and streaming exclusives in October, like the final season of FXâs What We Do in the Shadows, which comes out the week before Halloween. And if Iâm betting on any show to be a sneaky hit next month, itâs going to be the drama Rivals, an adaptation of Dame Jilly Cooperâs 1980s-set sex romp book thatâs part of her infamously horny The Rutshire Chronicles series. [Hereâs whatâs coming to Hulu in October](.
