Happy Earth Day 2024! I’ve already ruined things by driving my daughter to school instead of walking to school, but I will be making amends the rest of the day by keeping my private jet in the hangar, eating macroplastics instead of microplastics, and leaving the refrigerator door open all day to counter global warming. If we all work together, we can help keep our planet hospitable for a few more minutes. Here’s what to watch this week. -Tim   Your Watch This Now! newsletter is created by Senior Recommendations and Reviews Editor Tim Surette and more show-obsessed editors at TV Guide!   SEASON 2 PREMIERES WEDNESDAY ON APPLE TV+ [The Big Door Prize is still looking for its potential]( Apparently [I liked Season 1 of Apple’s The Big Door Prize more than most people]( its small-town charm, silly comedy, and existential mysteries enough to keep me invested in these characters whose lives are upended by a machine that supposedly tells them their life potentials. Season 2 promises more answers after the Season 1 cliffhanger, but expect another trickle of clues that are overshadowed by fun character work — and there’s a lot of character work as creator David West Read jams as many subplots as he can into 30-minute episodes. But for whatever reason, the early episodes of Season 2 feel a tad more stilted and rushed than Season 1, and missing the subtle intrigue of Dusty (Chris O’Dowd), Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), Giorgio (Josh Segarra), and everyone else’s moments in the liminal space between their fortunes and their real lives. There’s a fantastic show in here somewhere, hopefully it all clicks as the season progresses. SEASON 1 PREMIERES THURSDAY ON NETFLIX [Dead Boy Detectives brings back the glory days of The CW]( [The two teenage ghost-busting boys at the heart of this supernatural detective series are good at their jobs because they happen to be ghosts, too. Based on characters created by Neil Gaiman and Matt Wagner, the Dead Boy Detectives got their start in the Sandman comics before spinning off into their own series and now this TV adaptation, which sees Edwin (George Rexstrew) and Charles (Jayden Revri), two ghosts from different time periods, teaming up to solve paranormal mysteries. It looks like lighthearted fun, along the lines of the recently departed Lockwood & Co. or the classic supernatural CW shows with limited budgets but plenty of gusto.]( NOW ON NETFLIX [Baby Reindeer will stick with you]( [Yep, Baby Reindeer has been out on Netflix for a few weeks now, but it’s one of those word-of-mouth series that come out of nowhere and slowly build in popularity (it’s now the No. 1 show on Netflix). I finally caught it last week and it blew me away. Based on a true story (or rather, true stories), Baby Reindeer follows a comedian (creator Richard Gadd, picking from his life) whose run-in with an obsessive stalker (Jessica Gunning) ruins his life while also opening up old wounds from the past. It’s a dark comedy, with an emphasis on “dark,” but it speaks volumes about obsessiveness, abuse, sexuality, and healing, right down to its final moments. In a time when most shows go in one ear and out the other, I’m still thinking about this show… a lot.]( BETTER THAN GOOD [More shows like The Great]( Hulu’s historical satire The Great, created by Tony McNamara and starring Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great, had an excellent three-season run on Hulu that ended last year, but there are other shows that live in that same world of powdered wigs but modern-day storytelling. [Our list of shows like The Great]( will deliver sexy scandals, seafaring ships, and power grabs across many centuries. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
