[( Rhode Island State Senator Pam Lauria and State Representative Justine Caldwell, both former Moms Demand Action volunteers, were named the 2024 Demand a Seat Lawmakers of the Year for their unwavering leadership on gun safety! Senator Lauria and Representative Caldwell sponsored a life-saving secure storage law that was signed into law last month, making Rhode Island's secure firearm storage law the strongest in the country. Their success shows just how powerful our movement can be when volunteers run for office, win, and make real change happen. [Help us build a future free from gun violence by signing up to volunteer today.]( Courts & Litigation [( The Supreme Court ruled on two major gun cases this month in Garland v. Cargill and United States v. Rahimi: both cases posed massive risks to our right to a gun-violence-free future. In Cargill, the Court struck down a life-saving federal rule banning bump stocks—accessories that make assault weapons function like machine guns. These deadly devices are now legal in states without their own laws banning them. [Dive deeper into the decision on our blog.]( But the decision in Rahimi was a major victory for the gun safety movement: the Court ruled that a federal law preventing domestic abusers with restraining orders from possessing guns is constitutional under the Second Amendment. [Learn more about the implications of Rahimi.]( Everytown in the News [( The [NRA's first network TV interview in 10 years]( got off to a rocky start when a reporter asked, "One of your opponents, the organization Everytown, said because of the turmoil inside the NRA, 'the gun lobby has never been weaker.'" It's true: Between the NRA being found liable in a New York corruption trial, membership at an all-time low, and longtime CEO Wayne LaPierre stepping down this year, the NRA is at rock bottom. There are cracks in the gun industry's armor, and we're only just getting started. From the Field: Moms Demand Action [( Last month, we held Gun Sense University, our annual gathering of volunteers and survivors from across the gun violence prevention movement. We held our first-ever Hill Day in Washington, D.C., where volunteers met with federal lawmakers from all 50 states to demand action to end our gun violence crisis. And this year's GSU featured some very special guests: survivors of gun violence, local lawmakers, community partners, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and the President of the United States. Read more about our work at this year's GSU: ["Biden and gun control advocates want to flip an issue long dominated by the NRA."]( From the Field: Students Demand Action [( Our movement has been celebrating Pride by sharing stories from queer activists about how they find hope and resilience in this movement. Students Demand Action volunteer Leighanne Muñoz said it best: "My LGBTQ+ identity means that I know myself completely and fully. It means that I am full of love, not just for others, but for myself as well. Being LGBTQ+ allows me to live life in the way I feel most authentic. That's why during Pride Month and year-round, I celebrate by spending time with my friends who fully accept me and who will advocate with me for a better world that will accept everyone." [Read more in Leighanne's blog: "We Must Disarm Hate in All Its Forms."]( Research Corner [( Last month, Everytown Research joined forces with The Trevor Project to study the relationship between guns, mass shootings, and suicide risk among LGBTQ+ youth. LGBTQ+ youth face disproportionate rates of suicide attempt and suicidal ideation. We know that removing access to a gun from a person in crisis can reduce suicidal risk and save lives—which is why we cannot fix this glaring public health crisis without talking about the role that guns play.
