A few days ago, they posted an open letter on X condemning Israel’s treatment of Palestinians, and calling for other unions to voice their support for Palestine too. Users across the internet laughed, criticized, threatened, and cajoled the Union. From clever jokes all the way to death threats, the Union has seen a relentless wave of criticism after publishing their post. What’s actually funny is that the Union’s message had very few factually incorrect statements. - They classified the legal treatment of Gaza as a form of apartheid. - They criticized the deaths of Palestinian civilians from airstrikes. - They decried the destruction of schools, hospitals, and places of worship. The obvious criticism against the Union is that sex work is nearly universally condemned by Palestinians. Not just sex work, but any kind of sexual immorality is considered dishonorable. Gaza struggles with sex-driven honor killings to this day. Young women and girls are murdered by family members for engaging in premarital sex. One Palestinian girl in 2019 was beaten to death for simply posting a selfie with her fiancé. What neither side sees is that both of their actions are motivated by sex. And the misunderstandings they’ve confused as truths over time. The UK sex workers feel liberated by their ability to sell and buy sex as they please – and they want that for others. They don’t need global support to maintain thousand-year traditions that were driven by human biology.
