On 31 October 2020, the world lost the greatest secret agent the public has ever known… Greetings Everyday Spy, On 31 October 2020, the world lost the greatest secret agent the public has ever known… Sir Thomas Sean Connery, the most popular and beloved 007 to grace the role of James Bond. Let me tell you a family secret that rarely gets shared about me; I do not like spy-fiction. I don’t read spy-fiction novels, I don’t watch spy-fiction TV shows, and I don’t enjoy spy-fiction movies. On the rare occasion I stray from this personal preference, I usually end up shaking my head in disappointment along the way. But the glaring exception to my rule are the James Bond movies starring Sean Connery. Maybe it’s because I grew up watching Bond speak with a Scottish accent. Maybe it was because 007 Connery personified the unapologetic sexual brashness every teenage boy desires. Or maybe it’s simply because Sean Connery’s portrayal of a ‘secret agent’ is as far from reality as it gets. Whatever the reason, I do not turn down the chance to watch the Scotsman-turned-spook. At the time of his death, Sir Sean Connery was worth $350 million dollars. He was born to poor parents; was skinny and bullied through school; was sacked from the Royal Navy; and had a lack-luster professional career… Until he changed himself. And that self-transformation is what really makes Sean Connery someone to admire. He taught himself how to act. He taught himself charismatic speaking. He even taught himself how to carry his body with confidence and grace instead of his natural clumsiness. He was an unskilled milkman living paycheck-to-paycheck until he was nearly 30 years old. Now he is a legend. Now he leaves behind a legacy. Not only as a Hollywood actor, Broadway star, and heartthrob male model. But as a person who shaped their own future by taking risks (he stepped away from playing Bond), fighting hard (on Edinburgh streets as much as the silver screen), and pushing the limits of what others thought possible. Not by title, but by courage, I count Sir Thomas Sean Connery among my heros. God rest, Sir Connery.
