Resist temptation and stay focused [Image](https://) Greetings Everyday Spy, Last time, we talked about how self-discipline depends on willpower. Willpower means saying no to temptations. No willpower means no self-discipline. Imagine this: You have to take a tough math test. Right when you're in the middle of it, someone brings in a big plate of warm cookies to share. How long could you focus before wanting to quit? Studies show willpower runs after about 20 minutes. That’s not long by any means. And spies face temptation a lot - lies, money, threats. So you can imagine how resisting them all saps willpower fast. You face temptation every day too - getting distracted, giving up, doubting yourself. Spy training teaches you to make good choices based on facts and being brave. Instead of falling victim to easy choices based on feelings and fear. Personal development gurus sell expensive classes to those who don't believe in themselves. [But you want to be your best.]( That requires self-discipline. Self-discipline starts in a part of your brain called the ACC (anterior cingulate cortex). It controls impulses and willpower. The ACC needs blood sugar to work well. Low blood sugar makes willpower and self-discipline weaker. To keep blood sugar healthy for a strong ACC Eat "power fruits" like apples, bananas, and oranges. They help the ACC work for 4-6 hours. Time it well. Eat fruit 2-3 hours before you need willpower. It takes 1-2 hours to digest. Drink water with fruit. Not enough water makes it harder for sugar to get into your blood. Water also helps digestion. Your challenge: For the next 7 days, eat a power fruit 2-3 hours before you need willpower, and drink 1 liter of water (2 standard plastic water bottles) spread out each day. Email me and tell me what you notice at info@everydayspy.com [Self-discipline leads to motivation and success]( not the other way around. Use these healthy habits and watch your willpower skyrocket. Godspeed, #EverydaySpy P.S. Eating the right foods at the right times and staying hydrated are fast ways to boost willpower. Once you achieve this, you'll be able to [think and operate in ways that give you a true edge in your daily life.]( Andrew Bustamante, Founder of EverydaySpy.com, is a former covert CIA Intelligence officer, decorated US Air Force Combat Veteran, and respected Fortune 500 senior advisor.
