Jihi has anxiety nightmares sometimes. Greetings Everyday Spy, Jihi has anxiety nightmares sometimes. And every once in a while they’re pretty weird... One recent nightmare took place at a large home that belonged to a friend of ours. The house was packed full of kids that Jihi didn’t recognize. She was watching our daughter, Alai, and had also promised to watch another little girl. But the little girl was faceless, like the other children at the party. And Jihi was having a hard time keeping track of one little faceless girl in an ocean of faceless children. Jihi was focused on following the faceless girl when our daughter ran into a pool and started struggling to swim. Panicked, Jihi jumped into the pool fully dressed to save our daughter. When she pulled Alai safely from the water, Alai was happy and laughing… but the faceless girl Jihi was supposed to be watching was gone. Lost in the house and totally unrecognizable because all the other children looked alike. And Jihi felt ashamed to have lost the girl... A savvy dream interpreter would say that Jihi’s dream was a journey of self-discovery. The missing girl represented Jihi’s inner-child, the party was a symptom of too much time alone, and the faceless children reflected Jihi’s struggles with her personal identity. I blame the spicy Thai food we ate for dinner, since Jihi tried to drown the spice with a mango kombucha that Alai loves to drink. Whatever drove the dream, what struck me was that Jihi never lost sight of our own daughter. Not while she was distracted, not in the noise/chaos of a busy house, and not when she ran into the pool. 305,500 American children go missing from their parents for an hour or more in public places each year. Every parent shares the nightmare of being separated from their child in a public place. And that nightmare comes true for nearly 1,000 parents a day. Jihi never worries about our kids going missing because we’ve trained them according to an[ancient Japanese tradition of self-reliance.]( If you have kids, want kids, or watch kids, these traditions will bring you comfort most parents cannot imagine.
