But I’ve managed to maintain decent physical fitness by starting with a mix of easy indoor and outdoor workouts. Over time I’ve built up my workout tolerance and it just gets better and better. The core of my weekly training now is running 3-5 miles outside and then adding in my Spy Escape Workout. If you’re lucky enough to live in a mild climate, taking advantage of working-out outside is a must. When field operators serve in locations at-risk for disease and infection, we use the great outdoors as an ally against illness. Mother nature offers some surprising advantages in the fight against pathogens. The outdoors brings your body benefits from sunlight to soil and everywhere in between. Sunlight is the single best source of Vitamin D on earth. Vitamin D is a critical part of immunity response and maintenance and becomes increasingly powerful when paired with Vitamin C and Zinc. An outdoor workout on a nice morning (or evening) also nets you the benefits of an invisible immunity booster produced by plant life. The trees and vegetation around your neighborhood, local parks, and even your own backyard release an organic compound known as phytoncides. These natural antifungal, antibacterial agents also serve to boost the human immune system. When we breathe them in, they activate a type of white blood cell called the ‘natural killer cell.’ True to their name, the ‘natural killer cell’ is the strongest and most aggressive type of white blood cell in your immune system.
