Excellence collection; exquisitely crafted dials. Three outstanding 2022 Louis Erard Excellence novelties From their signature Excellence collection, including Le Régulateur, and displaying exquisitely crafted dials, here are three stunning new Louis Erards When watches from a manufacturer come at prices that are relatively quite accessible, and still present standards of watchmaking that are associated with far higher-end brands, it says a lot about the products and the brand that makes them. Louis Erard are one such brand. Their timepieces offer a lot more than accurate timekeeping in decently-made watches. With refined finishing and attention to detail, each timepiece exhibits values of fine watchmaking that you wouldn’t find in all brands that are priced as such. Handcrafts and decoration of surfaces, executed by very skilled and talented artisans are what some of Louis Erard’s watches offer. In addition to that, the brand have also been known for their collaborations with renowned artists and designers that have gained tremendous popularity. Some of them have even been nominated for prestigious awards such as the Geneva Grand Prix for horology (GPHG). It all comes together for the brand in Switzerland’s ‘watch valley’—the Jura, and Le Noirmont—their home. Here, we take a closer look at three of their finest new 2022 watches, from the Excellence collection. Each of these timepieces reflects the values of fine watchmaking that Louis Erard uphold, with fine craftsmanship, restraint and refinement. Excellence Le Régulateur ‘Louis Erard X Massena LAB’: a 2022 GPHG nominee Displaying a touch of 19th-century marine chronometry is the regulator-style display that has been a strong mainstay for the Louis Erard brand, in the form of Le Régulateur collection. This particular edition has been called a meeting place, as it brings together two makers in a truly collaborative way. The Massena LAB co-production, against a backdrop of classic chronometry, adds to an already impressive list of names that the brand have collaborated with recently, including Alain Silberstein, Vianney Halter, Atelier OÏ, Seconde/Seconde/, and Eric Giroud. The result is Le Régulateur ‘Louis Erard X Massena LAB’, which comes in two variations. The only defining element between the two is the dial: on one, the lower plate is plated in 2N gold, while the other is rhodium-plated. Both models come in a limited edition of 178 pieces. This is a symbolic number meaning ‘together we are stronger’—a principle dear to Louis Erard’s work. Launched in 2018, Massena LAB is an independent platform centred around watchmaking collaborations and experimentation. This watch is all about co-production. The Régulateur 'Louis Erard X Massena LAB' was designed to put on a show. Louis Erard provided the setting, set the stage and directed the theatre of operations, always with the same goal: to offer fine watchmaking quality at an affordable price. Massena LAB wrote the dialogue between a contemporary watch and a 19th-century marine chronometer with its own guiding principle. “A successful collaboration is one that makes sense,” William Massena explains. “Louis Erard allowed me to mix codes, and to democratise a style that’s usually reserved for wealthy collectors.” Reinterpreting the classic codes of the regulator display The meeting place is the regulator: a mechanical complication linked to the history of chronometry and to Louis Erard’s history. The reference to the marine chronometer results in an even more advanced search for readability than usual. It is an unusually sophisticated dial for a watch in this price category. The dial is made up of two levels. The two flanges on the hour and seconds counters (at 12 and six o'clock) are rhodium-plated with circular satin finish, with centres in silver-plated opaline. The large central minute hand points towards the outer rhodium-plated flange with circular satin finishing. The lower plate is rhodium- or gold-plated, with a grained finish to further increase the contrast with the counters and enhance the readability of the blued steel leaf hands. The polished steel case is fitted with a signature Massena LAB crown. It is exactly the same technique that Breguet popularised in the 18th century, but Louis Erard haven’t stopped at this classic framework, opening up a new territory for expression: exclusive, innovative and contemporary. It’s so Louis Erard, the logo isn't even printed on the dial. It's all in the pattern: a large diamond shape, opened out like perspective, with black flat spaces and lines engraved in the metal. A work of art that presents clear proof that traditional métiers d’art have a promising future. This is the second time Louis Erard have reinterpreted the art of guilloche (the first Excellence Guilloché Main was released in 2021). An art where the craftsperson’s hand meets the mechanism—a manual lathe with cams determines the designs, while the hand guides the chisel. This is a mark of exceptional watchmaking, the origins of which date back to the 16th century. MRP: ₹3,32,000 For more information, please call our Luxury Watch Helpline on [+91 8725028899](tel:08725028899), [+91 8725028883](tel:08725028883) [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp]( The age-old art of guilloche in a contemporary geometric form Guilloche is the art of decoration and repetitive patterns, on mainly metal. Traditionally, guilloche is used to create variation. As in music, the theme or motif creates the starting point, then the rhythm or associations are woven in. Traditionally, guilloche is based on a repertoire of patterns. There are nearly 80. And these patterns constitute the scale on which everything else is composed. But Louis Erard changed the rules under the artistic and strategic impulse of Manuel Emch. He wanted this second opus of Excellence Guilloché Main to be a 100-percent original creation, starting from the design, and utilising all the resources of artisan dial-maker Fehr in La Chaux-de-Fonds to enhance and modernise traditional guilloche. To create the dial, the operating range (or sequence of operations necessary for production) had to be assembled from scratch—from the first black varnishing to the final rhodium plating after the guilloche. The guilloche itself required all the dexterity of the guillocheuse. The same artisan who made the 2021 dial made this one as well. She created the 99 dials piece by piece, each one taking several hours of work on the manual guilloche rose engine lathe. Not to mention the engineers, who had to invent and manufacture new cams (large metal stencils that the lathe translates into a design and scales down to the size of the dial) to achieve this unprecedented result. The Excellence’s timekeeping: behind the guilloche dial The ‘Swiss guilloche main’ dial features signature fir tree hour and minute hands in blued steel, which are powered by an 38-hour automatic movement. The polished steel case, with an open caseback, is sized at 42mm, and is water-resistant to 50m. It comes affixed to a strap in black, grained calf leather with tone-on-tone stitching, and a grained calf leather lining in Louis Erard blue. The art and style of Louis Erard taking up the challenge of fine watchmaking. According to the brand, more métiers d’art will follow. The land of the Jura, where the house has its roots, is where the inspiration comes from for this natural-coloured version of the Excellence Petite Seconde model. The new version of the Excellence Petite Seconde lives up to its name: Terracotta. It is a combination of the warmth of the south and the softness of a Franches-Montagnes trail—home of Louis Erard watches. MRP: ₹1,66,000 For more information, please call our Luxury Watch Helpline on [+91 8725028899](tel:08725028899), [+91 8725028883](tel:08725028883) [Click here to connect with us on WhatsApp]( A dial that’s all about the exquisite finishing Here is a limited production of approximately 100 pieces per year by reference. The model is in line with the natural materials used in the Excellence triptych, in particular the use of stone, aventurine, lapis lazuli and malachite dials. It is no longer a question of stone, but of earth, of terracotta. With variations of semitones and shades on the dial, it is made such that no shine, no burst of light breaks the muffled accords. The monochrome dial brings out the subtleties of the design, contrasting the circular satin finish on the fine grain of the centre and minute track sections, highlighting of the snailed and recessed seconds counter at six o'clock. There is no highlighting—neither on the hands, nor on the indexes—which cast their delicate shadows on the dial like a forest in the softness of a white sun. The signature fir tree hands are treated in anthracite grey and polished. The transfers and indexes are also in anthracite grey. Available in two sizes—a standard 42 and a classic 39 A long-awaited evolution, the Excellence Petite Seconde Terracotta is available in two sizes, the traditional 42mm case and its refined 39mm counterpart. The watch is completed with a dark brown Baranil calf leather strap, with a polished steel pin buckle and functional catch spring bars enabling the strap to be changed quickly.
