Inspired by New York’s art deco icons. The Urwerk UR-105 CT Streamliner—New York City grandeur on your wrist Urwerk takes art deco-inspired design, and catapults it into the future Avant-garde and innovative, Urwerk has managed to carve out a niche for itself in the horological world. With inspirations ranging from steampunk and art deco to astronomy and space, with a hint of medieval leanings, Urwerk’s timepieces showcase quite the range, despite their distinctive looks. The UR-105 CT Streamliner is one such watch that harks back to the early years of the journey of its creators, Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner. First launched on Urwerk’s 20th anniversary, the Streamliner is said to have heralded a return to form for Urwerk—regarded one of the most offbeat and innovative independent watch manufacturers today. The watch not only flaunts a striking geometric angularity and symmetry, but also stands apart owing to its subtle retro art deco design cues, and its hood that can open to reveal the inner mechanism. Let’s delve deeper into this stunning timepiece. An homage to the brand’s earliest design muse—New York City While watch collectors are perfectly familiar with the product history of Urwerk, very few are aware of the difficult beginnings of the brand. In order to trace the inspiration behind the timepiece, let's take a trip back to the days when the company was still taking its baby steps. It was the year 1997, when Frei and Baumgartner had only just plunged into watchmaking, Frei graduated from the College of Arts and Design in Lucerne (Switzerland) and moved to New York. Baumgartner soon joined his friend, while their brainchild, the young company, was still finding its feet. Together in the city of dreams, they wandered about in the streets, basking in the charm of everything that was quintessentially New York—the brownstone houses, the art deco skyscrapers, and the gleaming subway thains, whose visuals left an indelible impression on their minds. The architecture and vibrant energy are brought alive in this timepiece, which is highly reminiscent of the art deco style, often seen in the architecture of New York, which was the epicentre of the Art Deco movement. In fact, the makers acknowledge that the minimalist design with few frills and clean lines are meant to echo New York’s architectural icons. Its shape and details recall the metallic ribbing along a subway car, and the skyward-reaching lines of the Empire State Building—the art deco-style skyscraper in Manhattan. Following close on the heels of the Art Deco movement, it was characterised by sleek, aerodynamic lines that emulated the profiles of trains, ocean liners, aeroplanes, and cars. The Streamliner is undoubtedly a child of this design school, as reflected in the prominent vertical, deep grooves on the protective breastplate and the sides of the case. These not only accentuate the aerodynamic form of the watch but also evoke a sense of speed. An architectural case, evocative of subway trains and art deco-style buildings The timepiece sports a unique shape in the form of an oblong, octagonal case, made of titanium and mirror-polished steel. Measuring 53mm by 39.5mm, it has deep grooves along its length. As Frei explains, “In the initial drawings, I thought of New York's Empire State, Chrysler and Comcast buildings. That is why it has that vertical structure that seems to go on forever.” On top of the case is a protective, hinged hood that can be opened like the hood of a car. When it is closed, the watch reveals only the essentials—the hour and minute readings. Once the cover is opened, it reveals even more of the metallic, industrial and almost steampunk-inspired design. The self-winding rate can be set with three different positions of a simple lever mechanism. In the ‘full’ position, the slightest movement of the wrist is harnessed to rewind the barrel spring. On the other end, you can turn the lever to ‘stop’ to disengage the self-winding system and wind up the UR-105 manually using the crown. And ‘red’ stands for reduced, which is an intermediate position, which engages the turbines to dampen the winding rotor and avoid over-stressing the mainspring, for times when you are particularly active. This helps in protecting the movement, reducing wear-and-tear and ensuring its longevity. The movement under the hood The timepiece is powered by the Urwerk UR 5.03 ‘wandering hour’ automatic calibre, which is characterised by four rotating satellites, each bearing three numerals, for a total of 12 hours. The calibre, which beats at a rate of 28,800vph, has been constructed with exotic materials, which include beryllium bronze for the satellite hours on Geneva crosses, aluminium for the open-worked carousel, and an alloy called ARCAP for the aforementioned super-light digital seconds display. The finishes are exceptional with circular graining, sanded and brushed surfaces and chamfered screw heads. Urwerk's signature satellite mechanism—open-worked for increased lightness Once you pop open the hood, the ‘engine’ within is revealed—the complex, technical and metallic, carousel carrying the satellite display. The wandering hour indication is based on an aluminium carousel bearing four satellites with three revolving numerals for the hours, picked out in Super-LumiNova. The completely redesigned carousel is now lighter, stronger, and far more efficient. The tip of each hourly satellite is equipped with a pointer indicating the minutes as it sweeps from right to left across the minute scale on the lower part of the display. The readily visible timekeeping details are completed by the digital seconds readout, displayed in tens of seconds. This mechanism was made using a photolithographic process, with each marker open-worked to make it as light as possible. It weighs less than one-tenth of a gram and is placed on an aerated honeycomb structure with a power reserve indicator on the right. A couple of red accents on the dial enhance legibility. The timepiece is worn on a fetching black leather strap, which completes the look. [The Urwerk UR-105 CT Streamliner]( Watch a video of the Urwerk Streamliner to discover how it makes a distinctive, yet versatile statement despite its art deco inspirations and futuristic appeal The makers’ American dream—now on their wrists According to co-founder and designer Frei, the titanium and polished steel model is “like New York City in broad daylight—bright and shiny,” and we heartily agree. Urwerk has always made a mark with its avant-garde architectural aesthetic and an unconventional indication of time. Through the Streamliner, the creators take us back to the New York they saw in their younger days, revisiting the iconic skyscrapers as well as the subway, making it a modern watch that accommodates strong expressions of nostalgia. On one hand, it is the perfect tribute to the earliest days of the brand as well as its creators, and on the other, it represents a perfect continuity in Urwerk's line-up.
