The collection honours Zenith's legacy while incorporating modern design Of Form And Function: The Zenith Defy Skyline Collection The collection honours Zenith's legacy while incorporating modern design, offering the perfect blend of style and innovation for watch enthusiasts "Feet on the ground and head in the stars," are words Zenith uses to describe its outlook. Zenith has been the epitome of horological métiers since 1865 (founded by Favre-Jacot when he was 22 years old), and it is one of the few Swiss brands that has successfully celebrated a 150th anniversary. Zenith holds a record of 2,333 timekeeping precision awards and the journey started when the brand won its first award for precision in watchmaking in 1902. These awards reward the level of excellence shared by the 80 métiers that come together to manufacture a Zenith watch. With many breakthroughs under its belt, the biggest has to be the Swiss brand’s innovation of the first automatic chronograph watch in 1969. On October 14, 2012, when skydiver, Felix Baumgartner decided to do the unimaginable – break the speed of sound – the Austrian trusted only one watch, and it had to be the Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th. In a mind-blowing free fall from the edge of space, Zenith was the official partner of the exhilarating Red Bull Stratos mission that set and broke many records and joined the list of a few treasured ‘space’ watches. The brand is so confident about the dependability of its watches that it put through gruelling tests. One such daring test involved the El Primero being strapped to the landing gear of a Boeing 707. The flight took off from Paris and the watch was unscathed upon landing in New York, despite the enormous jerks, fluctuation, and jolts that landing gear is subjected to. Defy: Defined In 2022, Zenith introduced the world to its ultimate luxury sports watch collection—the Zenith Defy Skyline. This definitive line included a variety of timepieces personifying the brand’s DNA of offering a strong visual identity, a unique movement working within, and exceptional technical innovation. “In just one year, the Defy Skyline became one of the most in-demand lines for Zenith. Its strong visual identity, unique movement, and effortless versatility has made it a compelling choice within the segment of integrated steel sports watches. It’s a purely modern creation full of details that carry on the enduring legacy of the Defy collection that goes back to 1969,” Zenith’s CEO Julien Tornare stated on the evolution of the Defy collection. The Zenith Defy collection of watches for men and women is the epitome of Zenith's endless pursuit of precision through innovation. Combining cutting-edge manufactured movements with futuristic forms and materials, the Defy collection continues Zenith's legacy of always surpassing itself and setting new standards of performance and style. For Zenith, the Defy collection is symbolic of ‘progressive watchmaking’ and builds upon the legacy of robustness and impeccable performance. The pushers of the Defy Skyline Chronograph trace the case’s sharp lines, and the screw-down crown with Zenith’s star keeps things watertight up to 100m; a fine example of form and function. Despite being a chronograph watch, the Defy Skyline Chronograph offers an option to choose from dials in metallic black, blue, and silver, displayed with an attractive sunray pattern. This dial appears uncluttered and aesthetically impressive, courtesy of the collection’s signature starry sky pattern with the traditional El Primero dial layout. Its three slightly oversized, overlapping sub-dials handle the elapsed seconds and minutes of the chronograph, not to mention the constant running seconds. The dial also features hour markers, rhodium-plated, faceted, and coated with Super-LumiNova for easy timekeeping in dark conditions. Its date window appears at 4.30 and matches the dial colour, while the 12-facet flange ring with a 1/10th-of-a-second scale follows the lines and angles of the dodecagonal bezel, which also acts as an extension for the hour markers. The Defy Skyline Chronograph is an honest representation of Zenith’s commitment to meticulous and practical designs. Evident in one of its noteworthy features, the watch comes equipped with an integrated quick strap-change mechanism. With a gentle push of a button, you are ready to swap the three-link steel bracelet with a star-patterned rubber strap with a steel folding buckle, included with the watch. The black and blue dials are paired with matching rubber straps, while the silver dial finds its contrast in a green rubber strap. Powered by an El Primero high-frequency movement, this timepiece marks the first skeletonised watch in the world to feature a 1/10th-of-a-second indication. Beautifully structured with a combination of polished and brushed surfaces, the 41mm steel case takes design cues from modern cityscapes where structures and light is bound in a constant moving interplay. Easy to wear with a total thickness of 11.6mm and offering a better fit with a lug-to-lug measurement of 46.3mm. The logo-stamped crown at three o’clock provides access to the movement and helps with the 100m of water resistance when screwed down. The watch comes in a black or blue open-worked dial, which is the star of the watch, both literally and figuratively. The symmetrical skeleton dial takes on the form of a four-pointed star pattern with enough space between each point to offer the wearer a wonderful view of the movement working within. This retro addition to the dial is inspired by the Zenith ‘double Z’ logo of the 1960s. Adding more efficiency and aesthetic symmetry to the dial is the presence of Super-LumiNova-filled baton-shaped hour markers and central hour and minute hands along with a constantly-running 1/10th-of-a-second counter at six o’clock. Under the immaculately designed skeleton dial sits the high-beat El Primero 3620 SK movement with a beat rate of 36,000vph. Built on a similar structure to the iconic El Primero 3600 1/10th-of-a-second chronograph. The efficient automatic bidirectional winding mechanism with a start-shaped rotor matches the colour of the dial. It clocks in a power reserve of 60 hours and is visible via the see-through caseback and the skeleton dial. Its architectural and highly faceted silhouette draws inspiration from the unique octagonal geometry of the early Defy models without merely attempting to recreate the past. It retains the same DNA of robustness and durability as its predecessors while bringing an edgier aesthetic. Fixed atop the 41mm stainless steel case with sharply defined edges, the faceted bezel is similar to those from early Defy models, reimagined with twelve sides that echo the hour markers. The screw-down crown emblazoned with the star emblem provides water resistance of 100 metres. The Defy Skyline features a geometrically structured and whimsically celestial star-studded dial, with a sunburst finish embellished with a perfectly aligned pattern consisting of engraved four-pointed stars, which is a modern reimagining of the Zenith “double Z” logo of the 1960s. Besides the central hour and minute hands and a date window at 3 o’clock finished in the same colour as the dial, the Defy Skyline brings something new to the table that’s as much a demonstration of technical prowess as it is a visually captivating animation rarely ever seen on a wristwatch. On the small counter at 9 o’clock, a constantly running 1/10th of a second-hand makes steady jumps in fixed increments, reminding the wearer of the fleeting nature of time and the precision of the 5Hz movement within and completing a full revolution every 10 seconds. The Defy Skyline is delivered on a steel bracelet with a satin-brushed surface with chamfered and polished edges, seamlessly following the contours of the faceted case. A colour-coordinated rubber strap with a starry sky pattern in continuity with the dial is also provided with a steel folding clasp and can be easily swapped.
