For the first time in history, the world’s highest court could decide to hold polluters accountable for the harm they cause to people and the planet. The EU is key in making this happen – but we only have three months to seal the deal. Let’s make sure the EU acts like a real ‘climate leader’ and saves our futures! [ A group of smiling women and men on a sunny beach with the sea partly visible in the background, wearing pink, blue, white, black garments with plants and flowers on them. They are the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change and Pacific Islanders. They have their hands in the air with signs as they rally right before the International Court of Justice Advisory Opinion vote at the United Nations on March 29th 2023. The signs they are holding say: Vote YES, We are taking the World’s Biggest Problem to the world’s Highest Court, Youth for Climate Justice, Endorse the Advisory Opinion. ] [ Sign the petitionÂ]( {NAME}, What if we could make big polluters pay for the damage they are causing? This is a decision the International Court of Justice (ICJ) will soon have to take. Petro-states and fossil fuel lobbies are terrified of what this could mean for them and are trying to water down this judgment. We have a plan to prevent that from happening: international bodies like the EU have 3 months to submit arguments to influence the court. The EU really cares about their image as a climate leader – so we can hold them to it! Let’s make sure the EU tells the court that nothing is more important than protecting the people from the climate crisis. Are you ready? [{NAME}, urge the EU to hold big polluters accountable and protect our future generations at the ICJ.]( There is no international law that holds countries accountable to protect their citizens from the climate crisis. But, the ICJ could soon make this happen. The court could give us, the people, the power to stop the worst polluters – corporations and states – and sue them for the loss and damage they cause. Cynthia Houniuhi, the president of the Pacific Islands Students Fighting Climate Change who began this quest for justice four years ago shares: “The environment that sustains us is disintegrating before our eyes. I don’t want to show a picture to my child one day of my island. I want my child to be able to experience the same environment and the same culture that I grew up in.” They are asking for the help of the Ekō community, to move the EU to take the bolder and stronger climate action that our world so desperately needs. Are you in? [Yes - I will call on the EU to champion human rights and climate justice in front of the ICJ.]( [ Sign the petitionÂ]( Thanks for all that you do, Daphne, Leyla, Ildem and the team at Ekō More information: [Blue Ocean Law represents Vanuatu in Historic Victory as UNGA Adopts Resolution to Seek ICJ Advisory Opinion on Climate Change,]( Blue Ocean Law. 29 March, 2023.
