[Donate $3]( another amount]( Thanks to the rampant destruction of their forest home for palm oil plantations, there’s only about 10,000 of the charismatic Sumatran orangutans left in the wild -- and deforestation is picking up speed. But our partner Forum Konservasi Leuser (FKL) is on the cusp of purchasing and protecting -- forever! -- critical areas of land that will give these apes the space they need to recover and thrive. If 5000 of us chip in the cost of a cup of coffee in the next 24 hours, FKL can get started securing the land immediately and expand their work protecting the forest. Can you help save these Sumatran orangutans? Our community has done so much work over the years to protect orangutans from palm oil pillaging, and this has been a huge part of it -- actually helping to buy the land and pay for patrols to stop deforestation and poaching. That happens through our local partner, Forum Konservasi Leuser. After securing the land, FKL educates local communities in sustainable resource use and recruits community members for jobs to protect the forest. We already helped them double their protected area, and now we can help them do even more as they expand 8x larger, piece by piece! And {NAME}, this area critically needs protection. It isn’t just wildlife. The Leuser Ecosystem has a crucial role in fighting climate change, storing massive amounts of carbon (the area we could buy stores almost 350,000 metric tons!). When these areas are hacked and set on fire instead of protected, thousands of years of stored carbon are released. In bad fire years, it’s been estimated as comparable to the fossil fuel emissions of all of Western Europe! This is an incredibly rare opportunity to work with others around the world to buy a piece of a critically endangered ecosystem and know you’ve helped protect it. Will you be one of the 5000 donors we need to buy their next tract of land quickly? The more we raise, the more they can buy right away – and every extra penny will be used to defend wild places like this from corporations bent on their destruction. [Donate $3]( another amount]( Thanks for all that you do, Danny and the Ekō team --------------------------------------------------------------- More information: [Forum Konservasi Leuser]( [Protect Indonesia's Leuser Ecosystem.]( Rainforest Action Network. [Deforestation for palm oil continues in Indonesia’s ‘orangutan capital’.]( Mongabay.22 September 2023.  Anything extra raised will power Ekō and our campaigns worldwide fighting for people and the planet.   Ekō is a worldwide movement of people like you, working together to hold corporations accountable for their actions and forge a new, sustainable path for our global economy.
