Varying Degrees of Ridiculous
Hi readers, it's your Eater EIC Amanda here with the food world stories (from within and without Eater) that I found interesting (or enraging!) this week. Dive on in:
Let's start right out with the sordid news: the Tim Maslow saga. The Boston chef, who is a Momofuku alum, a F&W Best New Chef, a frequent James Beard Award semifinalist, and the owner of two incredibly popular and lauded restaurants Strip T's and Ribelle, [was arrested at the Canadian border] last weekend with 22.5 pounds of marijuana edibles. That is unfortunate. What's more unfortunate: After the arrest, Maslow [uploaded and later deleted] two instagram videos showing the burning of Ribelle business cards and a printout of the restaurant's four-star Globe review. In one caption he wrote, "Last service in the books. So looking forward to gutting this bitch like a pig and getting it right." Cool, bro. As of now, Ribelle is still open.
Elsewhere in the [world of controversies], this [tweet] lit up the internet on Friday.
[Whole Foods oranges]
Whole Foods apologized ... and then [tried to get in on the joke].
Nashville's hottest cocktail bar is Old Glory. Built in an old boiler room once used by a dry cleaner, [this place has everything]: a smokestack, large cement blocks, a plant wall, a creepy staircase, and sixty foot ceilings.
I double checked: [this New Yorker video piece] on Craig Thornton, the chef behind uber-pretentious (But very good! So says everyone!) LA supper club Wolvesmouth is not satire.

Meanwhile, down in Texas, a former employee of Tim Love's Austin Lonesome Dove spray painted [a five-foot-high penis] on the door.
Last week 30 employees at Philadelphia restaurant Vetri were terminated because they didn't pass the "E-Verify" immigration status check initiated by Vetri's new owner Urban Outfitters. This week Amy McCarthy [takes a look] at what a larger implementation of E-Verify could look like for the restaurant industry, which, after the agriculture industry, has one of the highest percentages of immigrant workers.
Word to the wise (ahem, 16 Handles): Do not piss off America's [soft serve sweetheart]. She will cut you.

Out in LA, Besha Rodell is [not impressed] by splashy newcomer Otium, the project from French Laundry alum Tim Hollingsworth. "Take it all in â the beauty, the spectacle, that intangible feel of being at the very center of a scene at its most vibrant. Then take your awesome self and go eat dinner somewhere else," [she writes].
To end on a wildly uplifting note, my two favorite pretty-man-actors-with-great-accents Matthew Rhys (The Americans) and Matthew Goode (The Good Wife) [are starring in a show about wine] and it looks just adorable. It's airing on a British channel but maybe it will eventually make it to Netflix.
