It can’t be overstated how far-reaching the ADA’s impact was. Even the U.S. Capitol, a monument of American equality and justice, was inaccessible to people using wheelchairs before it was signed. The effort it took to get the ADA passed can’t be overstated either. In the 80s and early 90s, disability activists would crawl out of their wheelchairs and lay themselves in front of buses demanding equal access on public transportation. Historic photos show these individuals being dragged away and arrested by police, but it was protests like these and advocacy efforts from Easterseals that raised enough awareness to convince Congress to pass the ADA.
