⚠️ Warning - this email has everything you need to succeed on socials and is probably too in-depth... Social media is one of the biggest things to crack as an artist in 2024. As much as we wish it wasn't... I've never met an artist who "loves" doing social media. But when you see numbers start to work in your favour and opportunities start presenting themselves, you start to not hate it as much! Today I want to bring you into some current results with how YOU can do this yourself, there's nothing here that you couldn't do today, which is awesome. Meet Brian, me and my team have been working with Brian this year. He's a new artist based in the US and is in a development phase of his career, testing what is working well (not enough artists do this to be honest - the only way you can work out what lands for you is to test). A couple of weeks ago, we put out the below posts with Brian's song "Seeing Mama Cry" (which has also just hit 100K on Spotify completely organically as a new artist with no playlisting backing which is no mean feat)... Today we're going to focus on the post that is currently on 1.2M views, why and how it achieved that number and most importantly, how you can do this yourself. If you want to watch the post and come back to this email, [the link is here](. I don't want to have this sound like it's "easy" to hit 1M views, it definitely isn't. But there are techniques in here that will explain why this hit a big audience... Firstly... 1. The hook "if you're a Mom who gave up everything just to see them smile, I wrote this song for you" frames the context of who the video is for and the shot shows exactly what they are getting in the content. For someone who is a Mom, they're going to feel like it's been made for them. It's also more niche than saying something like "if you're going through a break up then this is for you", which feels a bit overused and generic. How you can do this today: When writing your hooks for your content, try to think about who will watch it and direct it to them in a way that feels meaningful. The other thing to do is make it about you but it has to feel vulnerable, ie "I'm currently going through this right now". 2. The SEO is there to tell the platform who the video has to go to, to allow for it to take. In the hook, it uses the word "Mom" and the phrase "I wrote this song for you", so the platform knows to send it to Moms and people who like music/have previously engaged with music related content. The description says "It takes a special person to be a mom, especially one as great as mine. So I wrote this song for all the strong mamas". This reinforces the hook and doubles down on the SEO whilst also telling the person watching the content that they are special which is more likely to make them watch more of the content. Remember the key to content is to get as many people watching to the 5 second mark. The hashtags are there to back it up, there's evidence both ways to suggest that hashtags help - we always find that in practice they tend to help a bit more, but perform better when it's interest based rather than just generic hashtags like #newmusic. How you can do this today: Try and work your description and hook together so they compliment each other and compound down on the context. Work with hashtags but don't worry about them being everything - you're looking for interest based targetting that makes sense with the content. 3. This content is multi-layered. It isn't just "hey here's me singing my song", it tells a narrative of Brian singing the song with his Mom there - promoting people watching to want to wait to see her reaction, which ups the overall retention of the video. There's a resolution at the end of the video where they hug, which is what you feel like you're waiting for throughout the video. How you can do this today: Try and go one step further. Instead of just singing your song, think about what visual would represent the song and whether you can include other people in your content to bring more emotion in. 4. Emotion is first. Music is emotional, no matter what the emotion is. This piece of content makes people FEEL, it isn't an advert. This is the hardest thing to achieve when creating content - how to make it not feel like you're just asking people to listen, but making them feel and WANT to watch it and share it. How you can do this today: Think about your content standing alone as a piece of entertainment (that doesn't mean always happy!) - stop telling people to go to Spotify and create stories. 5. Focus on shares rather than comments. Shares are EVERYTHING to platforms - you'll notice in the image there's over 26K shares, which is waaaaay more than the 1.1K comments. Shares keep your video going as the algorithm deems it to be more valuable and therefore also pushes it out more, as well as the share bringing in more viewers. How you can do this today: Ask people to share and give them the reason, for example if you have a love song, "share this with your person" could be something you put in your description. The word "share" seems to land better than the word "send" we've found. 6. The content follows the narrative of the song. It's about his Mom, so you see his Mom in it, it all makes perfect sense when the content pops up on your phone. When you're creating your content think about what your song is about and what you can create that represents the emotion of the song. How you can do this today: Think about what your song is about and how that might make sense - if it's not immediately obvious, think of how someone would listen, would it be blasted in the car for example? 7. Add extra narrative with text. In the post itself we added text like "trying not to cry" to guide the viewer along. How you can do this today: Try and add more story throughout your content to try and get people as far into it view-wise as possible. 8. Don't ignore Facebook. This was achieved on Facebook through sharing from Instagram. Also think about the platform you're posting on and the demographics, it's no surprise that this performed strongest on Facebook (it did still perform well on IG and TikTok with over 100K). How you can do this today: If you don't have your Facebook and Instagram connected up to share your reels, this is one thing you MUST DO TODAY! There's easy wins and something that doesn't hit on Instagram may well hit on Facebook. Right now Facebook is competing with the rest and so we're finding that organic reach is back there - something that we haven't had for a long time. But like everything, we don't know how long it's going to be back so take advantage whilst you can. It's important to note too... Building your socials isn't about just getting numbers over to Spotify. It's about building OPPORTUNITIES along the way so you're not just focused on the view count. The opportunities is what then allows for it all to compound. If you've managed to get to the end of this, well done! Huge congrats to Brian, he has an amazing work ethic and is always up to experiment - which is something I feel is a necessity in 2024. Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables. Usually, a reading ease score of 60-70 is considered acceptable/normal for web copy.
