I would like to make the step up to Elementary soon. What will the judges be looking for? Lara Newton Elementary is the first level of dressage when collection is introduced. Don’t get too bogged down by the thought of that, though, as you then might risk slowing down or stifling your horse’s paces too much – it’s just important to be aware that this additional level of work is coming. Really, the key to success at Elementary level is to show good suppleness. You can work on this by adding 10m canter circles, canter serpentines, leg-yield and simple changes in training. Spend lots of time in walk, and particularly work on leg-yield and shoulder-in to establish your horse’s ability to move through his body from your leg aids. Try to keep your reins even, closed and in front of you to ensure you’re maintaining straightness through your lateral work. And good luck!
