[Subscribe to Horse&Rider magazine.]( Team H&R are still feeling super-inspired after the great achievements Team GB had in Paris.  So, weâre looking for ways to polish up our riding. Weâre focusing on improving the small things and training little and often to hopefully see results in our dressage tests and jumping rounds.  Weâre also loving Dannie Morganâs advice in this issue on how to improve your horseâs canter. Playing around with canter-walk transitions really highlights how balanced you and your horse are!  Have you been having a go at any of the exercises in this issue? Lorna Locke At Novice level, the judge will be looking for the scales of training to be more established than at Intro or Prelim. These scales begin with rhythm, followed by suppleness and contact. The next scales include the impulsion and straightness, although collection isnât required in Novice tests. The judge will want the horse to have regular, unhurried paces, be obedient to the riderâs aids and show fluent transitions. The horse should move forward willingly and without tension, showing no resistance to the contact and bending consistently through the entire body. An occasional loss of straightness isnât serious at this level. The rider should be able to maintain a balanced position and the overall picture should be harmonious. The judge will use the scales of training and the directives within the test to decide upon a mark for each movement.
