['DC should be a state.' - President Joe Biden]( Last month, House Democrats took steps to enfranchise more than 700,000 Americans by holding a historic hearing on making D.C. the 51st state. President Biden, Mayor Bowser, Stacey Abrams, and a growing majority of the American people support D.C. statehood – but Republicans in Congress are still fighting tooth and nail to stop it, simply because they think it would hurt them politically. Here's why that is unacceptable: The GOP's refusal to grant D.C. statehood is voter suppression – plain and simple. Over 700,000 people call D.C. home – more than the populations of Wyoming or Vermont. But their voices are SILENCED in the House and Senate. The lack of voting representatives in Congress is taxation without representation, and it has left more than 700,000 Americans subject to watered-down relief packages, inadequate defense, and increased barriers to essential needs like health care – all of which disproportionately affect Black Americans, who make up nearly half of D.C.'s population. We cannot let the GOP continue to disenfranchise tax-paying Americans for political gain. {NAME}, you've been identified as a highly informed Democrat in NY, and we're counting on you to take a stand for voting rights. We need 23 more people from 10016 to speak out before midnight: Tell Congress to make Washington, D.C. a state!
