This means I will be the first Native American woman to chair a national party organization. Earlier this year, my daughter asked why I’m always so busy; why I have so many meetings, boards to serve on, and planes to catch. I told her what I’m telling you now: when you’re the first, you have to show up — so that you won’t be the last. I’m often the only woman and Native person in these decision-making rooms. If I don’t show up, then we don’t have representation. And if I don’t do a good job, it’s an excuse to not include us in the future.
