Defender, The Arctic is teeming with life – and much of that life depends on caribou. Year after year, caribou herds migrate across the Arctic landscape like clockwork. Their numbers help sustain countless other species and communities, and in their migration they return to calving grounds where they give birth to future generations. But this timeless cycle of life is in danger of being thrown out of balance. An area in Alaska’s Arctic known as the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (Reserve) holds vital habitat that is threatened with pollution and disruption by oil and gas companies. The good news is that help is coming: The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) recently improved protections for more than 13 million acres of “Special Areas” - areas with exceptional wildlife and other values - in the Reserve! And BLM is now seeking input about whether to expand some of those Special Areas. It’s a huge step toward preserving the Arctic. Now the Biden administration needs to hear our support for greater action to protect the Reserve and its wildlife! [Add your name: Urge the Biden administration to endorse increased protections and expanded Special Areas in the Reserve!]( As of today, the troubling reality is that caribou populations are already on a staggering decline, and that many species could soon follow. The Arctic is warming up four times faster than the rest of the world. New oil and gas projects would cause that warming to accelerate – and the development itself would fracture delicate habitat that caribou, polar bears, migratory birds and other animals depend on for survival. That’s why expanding protections right now is so important. We’re running out of time to stop the decline of Arctic wildlife like caribou. Preserving key habitat and expanding protected Special Areas in the Reserve is our best chance to stop this cycle of life from being broken. Join the call to save the Arctic and its wildlife: Add your signature urging the Biden administration to expand protections in the Reserve right away! Text with a very high Flesch reading ease score (about 100) is straightforward and easy to read, with short sentences and no words of more than two syllables.
