So get hyped. Nvidia (NVDA) brought fire, ruin, and devastation to its critics yesterday, delivering earnings and revenue well beyond what experts expected. Overall sales were up 171%, hitting $13.51 billion. Gross margin was also up an astonishing 25%+ compared to the same quarter last year. AI chips were up 191%. Revenue was up 101% compared to last year. Earnings per share were $2.70, compared to the $2.07 expected. And finally, the revenue guidance for the current quarter was raised beyond expectations. NVDA was up more than 3% during the trading day and more than 6% in after-hours trading. The company also projected a bright future for AI. “A new computing era has begun,” said founder and CEO Jensen Huang. “Companies worldwide are transitioning from general-purpose to accelerated computing and generative AI.” The question now - is this market too big for two companies? NVDA is the unquestioned leader when it comes to this market, but rivals include AMD, which was up 3.5% during the trading day and up another 3% in after-hours trading. The assumption seems to be that a rising tide will lift all boats. Critics alleged that NVDA’s staggering rise this YTD - almost 230% taking into consideration yesterday’s gains - was mostly about what the future held. However, NVDA is making record revenue now. NVDA is poised to use its advantage in generative AI to build an insurmountable lead. AMD can ride its momentum for now, but it is going to need to show investors something or else they are simply going to pile in behind NVDA.
