What are you going to wear? Sometimes itâs good to look at a few suggestions then add your own tweaks and ideas. Thatâs what these are for. “Business Casual” doesn’t have to be a bad thing. And while workplaces are getting more and more casual, it’s still the norm for many. Is it possible to upgrade the usual, yawn-worthy trousers/tucked in shirt/clunky lace up shoes combination? Absolutely. Here’s one way, without straying too far (i.e. adding a sportcoat) from the norm.Â
[Style Scenario: Business Casual that actually looks good | Dappered.com]
The Sweater: [UNIQLO Extra Fine Merino V in Navy – $39.90]( The HVAC systems in most offices can be downright unpredictable. Some days it’s hypothermic, and then the next day it’s so stifling that you wonder if Cerberus has moved into the adjacent cubicle. So skip the cheap cotton or cotton/cashmere blends and opt instead for wool. It’ll keep you warm when it’s cold, and not hold on to sweat when it’s hot. UNIQLO’s extra fine merino v necks are a deal at just under $40, and sometimes less when on sale. They move extremely well, and the V dips neither too far, nor too shallow.
The Pants: [Nordstrom Flat Front Wool Trousers – $59.70]( ($99.50). Just like the sweater, the upgrade here is to wool. And it’s worth it. Along with the temperature regulating characteristics, wool doesn’t wrinkle like a pair of cotton chinos will. And you can go plenty of wears between dry cleaning. The “light grey” here is neither boring-khaki, or a too-dressed-up charcoal. Lightweight and very comfortable. If you don’t want to mess with taking these to a tailor to get hemmed (they come unfinished), [try the Lands’ End Tailored Fit year’rounder](//www.landsend.com/products/mens-tailored-fit-yearrounder-wool-trousers/id_200237?sku_0=::LCH). You can have those hemmed to a precise length before they ever hit the post.
The Shoes: [Banana Republic Tully Suede Chelsea Sneaker – $76.80](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1032802&pcid=1032801&vid=1&pid=361755002) when 40% off ($128). If Sportscenter anchors are wearing sneakers with suits, then most of us can get away with a pair of suede sneakear/chelsea hybrids in our business casual office. If you don’t think you can? [Opt for some suede wingtips](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1032803&pcid=1032801&vid=1&pid=361770002). Skipping the smooth leather laceups, especially the conservative chunky kind, and opting for something a bit more contemporary in suede, is an easy switch that makes a big impact. Still professional, but a lot more style points.
The Watch: [Seiko SNDC31 Chrono – $99.99](. Man. Some of you lost your MARBLES on social the other day when [the review of the new Todd Snyder Timex went live](. “But I got an automatic blah blah quartz sucks bla bla cheap Timex blergh blergh WHARRGABL!!!” So yeah, it’s overpriced. That’s acknowledged in the post. Anyway, opt instead for this Seiko chronograph. A lot less money compared to the new T.S. Timex, and you get that same vintage aesthetic.
The Shirt: [Banana Republic Slim-Fit Tech-Stretch Cotton Solid Shirt – $47.70](//bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=1106843&pcid=44866&vid=1&pid=335279022) when 40% off ($79.50). BR’s newest foray into the world of techwear. A basic, button down white shirt, but in a blend of 57% cotton, 40% “COOLMAX polyester,” and 3% spandex. Got a few on the way for review. Reviews so far are positive.
The Belt: [Marino Genuine Leather Ratchet Dress Belt in Burnt Umber – $19.99](. Do NOT knock these until you’ve tried them. Sure, you might want to point and yell “NERD ALERT” at the sight of a ratchet belt, but avoid the cheesy buckles and go with the ones that make it look like you’re wearing a regular ol’ belt, and you’ll never go back.
The Briefcase: [Frye Carter Slim in Olive – $173.96]( ($348.)Â Canvas and leather = casual but not too casual. Half off helps too.
The Writing Utensil: [Lamy AL-Star Fountain Pen in Grey Aluminum – $39.96](as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00V56CFHO&linkCode=as2&tag=dappered-20&linkId=BVR2CRQG3VK35WZQ). Even though we’re living in the digital age, having a dependable (and not to mention, slick looking) pen on you isn’t a bad idea. We worker-bees still write. The aluminum exterior helps keep it light, and the extra ink cartridges are good to [stash in your desk](. This way, with your own pen, you won’t have to depend on office-provided, chewed up Bics Pete in Sales has been gnawing on all day, every day. Seriously. Dude goes through ballpoints like floss.

[Longwing Bluchers / Derby Buying Guide: From Cheap to Investment Worthy](r/Dappered/~3/MIpqrzkE4B8/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email)
Posted: 04 Sep 2018 11:00 AM PDT
About the Author:Â Adam Terry is a 30-year-old Technical Trainer in the heating and manufacturing industry. Heâs #menswear by day and #workwear by night. He enjoys raw selvedge denim, Scotch whisky, and working on maintaining his dad bod.
So, you read that (overly) thorough [review of those beautiful Grant Stoneâs the other day]( and now youâre in the market for a pair of longwing âAmerican broguesâ? Weâve got you covered. But if you’re new to this style of shoe, here’s what makes a longwing brogue:
- Unlike many other (most?) wingtips, the âwingâ sweeps all the way around to the back of the heel, as opposed to dipping down towards the sole about halfway back.
- Open, [blucher or derby style lacing](.
The result is a shoe that somehow walks the line between casual and dress unlike any other. Casual enough to wear with jeans, but you can pull them off with certain suits too (you might notice that J. Crew loves to shoot their suits with longwing bluchers). Now that that’s covered, here are a handful of stylish options to consider at various price points:
[#1. The Budget Pick: Aston Grey Lovorwen via DSW – $99.99](20oxford/390656?activeColor=240)
[Aston Grey Lovorwen via DSW](20oxford/390656?activeColor=240)
You think you love the look of a brogued wingtip and you want to give them a try, but youâre not ready to commit half your rent check on an investment grade pair quite yet? The almond-shaped, lightly burnished toe and slightly darker tan color makes this pair from Aston Grey the versatile Budget Pick. (Pro-tip: If you sign up for DSWâs newsletter email, youâll get $10 off and free shipping!)
[#2. The Smart Casual Pick: Meermin Chestnut Country Calf Long Wing Bluchers – $175]( (plus shipping)
[Meermin Chestnut Country Calf Long Wing Bluchers](
For those who love dressing up a pair of raw denim jeans or pressed chinos, this pair from Meermin comes loaded with texture in the form of chestnut country calf. A noticeable upgrade in quality over most mall brand shoes, Meerminâs bluchers use full grain French leather, thick vegetable tanned leather insoles, a rubber outsole, and are stitched with proper Goodyear welting. Consider these the Smart Casual bargain coming in under two Benjamins. Returns are relatively easy, too, if youâre not sure of your sizing. Meerminâs store in SoHo NYC accepts returned goods. Just know that you’re on the hook for steep international outbound shipping ($35) as well as shipping them back to NYC if they don’t work out. So $175 is NOT the price you pay. More like $210. Best case. But still, many see these as an amazing value.
[#3. The New Standard: Grant Stone LWB Crimson Chromexcel – $350](
[Grant Stone LWB](
Of course a pair of Grant Stoneâs terrific longwings made the list. Editor’s Note: And no, [they didn’t pay to be here.]( No one does. Ever. After [testing the British tan pair around the house for a few days](, I secretly wished for something slightly darker for Fall that could easily take me from my conservative business casual office straight to dinner and drinks with friends. Say hello to The New Standard. Using Horweenâs legendary Chromexcel leather and a micro studded rubber sole, Grant Stone has delivered one of the best do everything, go everywhere shoes at a price point thatâs hard to beat. Rock these âwings with your suit and tie or hoodie and jeans.
[#4. The American Classic:Â Allen Edmonds MacNeil – $425 (firsts)]( or [$299 (seconds)](
[Allen Edmonds MacNeil](
The original Allen Edmonds MacNeil longwing was introduced way back in the early 1960âs. It is still on offer today because the tapered, sleekish silhouette fills the niche for lots of people searching for a stylish, yet conservative business shoe. Still proudly hand assembled in Allen Edmondâs Port Washington, WI factory, the MacNeil can be ordered in a few different shades of âpremiumâ calfskin with double oak leather soles or an optional studded rubber sole. I am particularly fond of the Walnut shade and think it looks best when worn with lighter blue, brown, or green suiting. (Pro-tip: If $425 is out of your budget, but you still want American made shoes, [roll the dice on]( some âsecondsâ quality MacNeils. Typically, manufacturing defects are more visual than structural. Just know that you’ll have to shell out for a $25 restocking fee for any returns on seconds through the mail.)
[#5. The Spanish Armada: Carmina 532 Bluchers – $450](
[Carmina 532 Bluchers](
The Albaladejo family that owns Carmina and Meermin have been crafting shoes around Mallorca, Spain since 1866. Carmina is the Audi to Meerminâs Volkswagen: more refined and more robust. This pair in brown vegano leather is particularly beautiful, as the darker brogueing accentuates the perfect shade of mid brown. Paired with a brown Dainite studded rubber sole and a storm welt, this is the pair you reach for if youâre headed for that red-carpet movie premiere in the city or taking your partner to an anniversary dinner atop the Eiffel Tower and youâre not sure where the night will take you. Right? People do that, don’t they?
[#6. The Three Identical Strangers: Alden LWB in Brown](, [Green](, or [Blue – $595](
[Alden Longwings](
You dream of someday living in the PNW with your partner and pup, spending your weekends window shopping all of your favorite retailers who specialize in niche Japanese raw denim, British heritage outerwear, and American made shoes that you can barely afford. You enjoy taking photos of your recent purchases and share them regularly with your followers on social media, even though youâre not an âinfluencer.â If any of that rings true, you canât go wrong with these special suede makeups from Alden. Those hunting green suede âwings would look killer with your cuffed Momotaro jeans and Private White V.C. Harrington jacket!
[#7. The King Wing: Alden LWB in Color #8 Shell Cordovan – $760](
[Alden LWB in Color #8 Shell Cordovan](
Introduced in 1958, Aldenâs #975 Color 8 Shell Cordovan longwing bluchers originally sold for around $30. Calculating for inflation over the past 60 years, you would think these âGrailâ worthy shoes should retail for around $260. Unfortunately, this just isnât the case as the unique equine leather alone can easily cost upwards of $100 per square foot. For comparison, the Horween Chromexcel leather used to craft those $350 Grant Stoneâs generally sells for around $6 per square foot. What makes Shell Cordovan so special?
For starters, itâs pretty rare. Horses have two âshellsâ or layers of fibrous flat muscle beneath the hide on the rump. Each shell can be used to produce a single shoe. As horses arenât a large part of the worldâs food industry these days, the leather is always in short supply.
Next, the tanning and dyeing process for Shell Cordovan can take up to six months and a lot of manpower to perfect the 100+ year old recipe. Only the most senior and talented employees work on the Cordovan shells.
Finally, Shell Cordovan is incredibly durable. It was originally developed for straight razor strops, but now itâs mainly used in footwear and small leather goods. As the leather gets worn and ages, it tends to roll like a wave instead of crease and wrinkle. The dye colors shift, too â Horweenâs infamous Color #8 starts out as a deep, rich shade of burgundy and ages gracefully into gradients of cabernet red, eggplant purple, and milk chocolate. No two shells are alike; each will age differently.
Weâre all in agreement that $760 is a lot of money for a pair of shoes. What you get for your investment is a pair that could literally last you a lifetime if taken care of. Theyâre one of the pinnacles of American style. They are Gunboats â solid, sturdy, if not a bit heavy. The King Wings.
NOTE: Shoes at top of post, moving from left to right: They’re all Alden Long Wings. Tan Suede, Shell Cordovan, and Whiskey shell cordovan. All can be hard to find, depending on the retailer you’re going through. The Color #8 pair with black edge dressing [were purchased from J. Crew](//www.jcrew.com/p/mens_category/shoes/oxfords/alden-shell-cordovan-longwing-bluchers/26508?color_name=dark-burgundy), which is short on supply right now. [Brick + Mortar in Seattle]( sells the same shoe, only with “antique” light brown edge dressing. Same shoes otherwise.Â
