STORY OF THE DAY
[Declassified: Apartheid profits â the tap root of the National Party](
By OPEN SECRETS
Welcome to the second instalment of Open Secretsâ series, Declassified: Apartheid Profits. While researching the recently published book Apartheid Guns and Money: A Tale of Profit, Open Secrets collected approximately 40,000 archival documents from 25 archives in seven countries. This treasure trove contains damning details of the individuals and corporations that propped up apartheid and profited in return. Many of these documents were kept secret until now. Most remain hidden despite South Africaâs transition to democracy. OPEN SECRETS believes that it is vital to allow the public to scrutinise the primary evidence. Here we invite you behind the scenes to look at the documents that informed the book. Last week we detailed a few of the corporations which bankrolled the National Party. This week we zoom in on Naspers â the media giant whose top management described it as the âtap root of the National Partyâ.
[North Korea plans Guam strike](
North Korea has announced its intention to launch several missiles towards Guam, flying over Japan. The announcement has triggered an understandable diplomatic furore; something which Dear Leader probably intended to happen. Stating that President Donald Trump was "bereft of reason", the North aims to fire Hwason-12 rockets over Japan and hit the sea 17km from Guam. Trump, meanwhile, responded in typically Trumpish style, Tweeting on Wednesday about America's modernised, "renovated" nuclear arsenal.
[Van Niekerk on track for 200m gold](
Wayde van Niekerk will run in the 200m final at the IAAF champs. The current 400m champion will be running in the 200m final alongside Botswana's Isaac Makwala, currently the fastest runner in this event this season. Van Niekerk only just squeaked into the finals, however, placing third in a tie for 20.28 seconds. If he wants gold in the Thursday final, van Niekerk will need to dig much deeper today.
[Police shoot suspect in anti-terror police ramming](
Paris police shot and arrested a suspect after he crashed into soldiers near a barracks in the capital. The suspect, a 36-year-old Algerian, was shot after a dramatic car chase. It is unclear whether any soldiers were seriously wounded, but none are believed to have died in the attack.
[New dinosaur gets its name](
A species of titanosaur discovered in Patagonia several years ago has been named. Weighing in at around 70 tons, the "Patagotitan mayorum" would have been the equivalent size and weight of 10 elephants. The giant dinosaur was discovered as part of a trove of fossils in the La Flecha site, north-east Patagonia.
