Plato was sworn in as a city councillor this morning, taking the helm from outgoing mayor Patricia de Lille. With the opposition party somewhat mauled by an exodus of pro-De Lille councillors, the race is now on to restore the "optics" of the DA before elections next year. [Herron resigns from DA]( Nothing says "we're starting a band!" quite like an exodus from a political party. Today City of Cape Town mayoral committee member for transport and urban development Brett Herron announced his resignation from the council and party. Herron, himself also implicated in allegations of fraud and corruption by his now-former party, announced that he would go and further his studies. That said, all flags point towards something new on the political party horizon. [Appeals to Ramaphosa at gender-based violence summit]( Activists have issued a call to President Cyril Ramaphosa to release Martha Marumo, a woman imprisoned for life after killing her abusive husband. Ramaphosa was greeted with calls of "release her now" while speaking at a national summit on gender-based violence. [Oceans heating faster than expected]( The Earth's oceans are heating up considerably faster than generally expected. An assessment by scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change revealed that the oceans have absorbed 90% of the raised temperatures brought about by man-made carbon emissions. This is a 60% increase from initial estimates. This as 2017 recorded the world's highest amount of carbon emissions.
