[Click here for the web version of this email]( [Daily Maverick] Sunday, 8 July 2018 Story of the Week [DA’s Lennit Max dumps Western Cape government post to advise Police Minister Bheki Cele]( By Rebecca Davis Well-known DA figure Lennit Max has resigned from his position as Western Cape Member of the Provincial Legislature to take up a job advising Police Minister Bheki Cele. Max argues that he is perfectly entitled to do this while maintaining his DA membership – but at a press conference to announce his move, he also delivered several digs aimed at the DA. [SARS inquiry: Moyane’s false argument looks to be politically motivated]( From a legal perspective, the attempts by former SARS Commissioner Tom Moyane and his legal representative Dali Mpofu to paint the SARS commission of Inquiry as “grossly unfair” to Moyane, and the demand that the commission cease its work, are rather odd as the arguments have no valid legal basis and are based on false claims. But – while unethical – it may make sense from a political perspective to try and create an impression in the minds of ordinary people (and governing party leaders) not knowledgeable about the law, that the commission is biased against Moyane. By Pierre De Vos [An Orgy of Galas]( Now there’s a collective noun we didn’t know we didn’t want. By Richard Poplak [Zanu-PF’s incumbent Emmerson Mnangagwa (75) vs MDC Alliance’s Nelson Chamisa (40)]( The key players in the polls on 30 July have to prove to Zimbabweans and the world that they are capable of turning the country around. By Daily Maverick Staff Writer [Finally, the National Health Insurance is here – to fix nothing 427 Reactions]( We really do not need the National Health Insurance, certainly not its current form and shape. The only time we need the NHI is when Minister Motsoaledi is looking for a PR exercise that will deflect attention from his incompetency, which has brought public healthcare to its knees. By Bandile Hadebe [Belgium vs Japan epitomised the spirit of the World Cup]( From feisty play to gladiators consoling each other and even fans cleaning up the stadium afterwards - wouldn’t it be great if all games were like this one? By Antoinette Muller [The New Age experiment: Government’s attempt to control the media has done industry no favours]( The Closure of the New Age/Afro Voice newspaper hopefully signals the beginning of the end of a destructive phase in South African media control. By Anton Harber [White fragility debunked – be part of the solution]( White people, who have gained so much from oppressive systems such as apartheid, are curiously reluctant to engage in meaningful conversations and actions which concern such substantial structural advantages.
