Welp, Friend, Republicans are expected to vote on a new speaker this week and the top contendersâ€

Welp, Friend, Republicans are expected to vote on a new speaker this week and the top contenders—Majority Leader Steve Scalise and Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan—are...[not great](, to put it politely. [Sign the petition to Congress: No more MAGA circus. Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker.]( [Sign the petition]( Scalise was Kevin McCarthy's number two, but is probably most famous for allegedly calling himself "David Duke without the baggage." Jordan, for his part, is leading the MAGA impeachment inquiry, and was described by former Republican speaker John Boehner as a "legislative terrorist." Both of them are terrible, horrible, no good, very bad, and particularly awful members of Congress. And there's a much better option: Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. Last week, Jeffries, a known consensus-builder, put forth a [vision]( for bipartisan governance amid MAGA madness. If House Republicans running in swing districts are tired of being forced to take [bad votes]( and cater to the hard-right flank, they can join a bipartisan governing coalition with Democrats—effectively defanging Matt Gaetz and the Freedom Caucus. Jeffries' leadership would be a welcome reprieve from GOP brinkmanship. With no speaker, the House can’t get anything done—and the House has stuff it needs to get done. We need a speaker able to rise above Republican dysfunction and rancor. Jeffries offers a path to a better House chamber. [Enough with the weak leadership and MAGA circus. Sign the petition: Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker!]( [Sign the petition]( Keep fighting, Monique Teal, Daily Kos Read more about why Jeffries is the best option for the speakership below. --------------------------------------------------------------- Friend, [sign the petition to Congress: No more MAGA circus. Hakeem Jeffries for Speaker.]( [Sign the petition]( The past week in Congress has been surreal, with Kevin McCarthy getting booted out—the first time in U.S. history that a House Speaker was voted out of office. With no Speaker in place to allow Congress to conduct its business, we are in grave danger of a government shutdown in November—and all funding (such as needed aid to Ukraine) is now in jeopardy. But with the MAGA circus, this was all predictable. We watched in January as Republicans took 15 rounds of voting to elect a Speaker. Then, they held our economy hostage with the threat of default and nearly triggered a job-killing recession. And when their "leader,"Speaker Kevin McCarthy, attempted to avert that shutdown, they [ousted]( him for working with Democrats, a necessary hurdle in a divided government. Republicans are too busy infighting to properly run the government. We need to put an end to this dysfunctional "leadership," and that means looking elsewhere for leadership. [Sign if you agree: Hakeem Jeffries has unanimous support among House Democrats to be Speaker. All we need is 5 House Republicans to join and elect his steady leadership.]( [Sign the petition]( Democrat Hakeem Jeffries is an impressive leader who has served in Congress for 10 years and has a well-deserved reputation as a consensus builder. While it took House Republicans 15 votes in January to pick their speaker, Jeffries enjoyed unanimous support from all House Democrats able to vote at the time. House Republicans running in swing districts are tired of being forced to take [bad votes]( and cater to the hard-right flank. MAGA nihilists like Matt Gaetz and Freedom Caucus members who have outsized power in their party. Jeffries taking over the gavel would be a gift to the embattled House GOP. Enough is enough. We cannot continue to be held hostage by extremist lawmakers who have repeatedly demonstrated contempt for this country. It's time for real leadership. To save themselves, and the country, so-called moderate Republicans need to replace McCarthy with Jeffries. [Enough with the weak leadership and MAGA circus.
